Heavy fabrics can feel intimidating at first, especially when you start working with denim, canvas, bags, or home décor projects.

But usually, the biggest difference comes from a few simple adjustments:
✂️ The right needle
✂️ Slightly longer stitches
✂️ Slowing down
✂️ Reducing bulk where you can

These tips that can help make sewing thicker materials feel much more manageable.

Because confidence with heavy fabrics doesn’t happen all at once, it grows one project at a time.

If you’re new to serging, all those threads can feel… a little chaotic.

This is one of the simplest ways to actually understand what your machine is doing.

Using different thread colours lets you see exactly how each part of the stitch is formed, which makes troubleshooting so much easier when something looks off.

Keeping this sample nearby is a quick way to troubleshoot. Great for those times down the road when you haven’t serged in a while but have changed your threads and are working with a new fabric and suddenly, your tension is off.

Save this for later, you’ll thank yourself mid-project!

Whether you’re making bags, garments, embroidery projects, or home décor, having the right support underneath your fabric can completely change the finished result.
