In 1983, Suburbia (also initially distributed as 'Rebel Streets') premiered on the American independent circuit. Written and directed by Penelope Spheeris, it was backed by the legendary producer Roger Corman through New World Pictures.

The feature film served as a narrative extension of Spheeris's previous work, two years after she had documented the Los Angeles music scene with 'The Decline of Western Civilization' (1981). This time, the director used the fictional format to tell the story of "The Rejected" (T.R.), a group of teenagers who run away from dysfunctional homes and form a squatter community in abandoned houses on the outskirts of the city, operating under the codes of the punk movement. Although it had its official premiere on this day in 1983, the film only reached commercial theaters en masse in April 1984.

In order to preserve realism and avoid Hollywood caricatures, Spheeris dispensed with conventional professional actors, recruiting the cast directly from concerts and the streets of Los Angeles. The cast included young actors like Chris Pedersen, Bill Coyne, and a then-unknown Michael Balzary (Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers) under the moniker "Mike B. The Flea."

The film's structure incorporated the musical component as a narrative element, featuring live performances by key Californian hardcore punk bands of the era: T.S.O.L., The Vandals, and D.I.
