Please oh please remember SOMETHING

The average kid spends 7 hours a day on a screen. Their parent sits next to them on a different screen. And we wonder why they can’t hold a conversation.
I’ll say it directly. If your child is growing up without a parent who sits at a table with them, puts the phone down, and plays a game - you are outsourcing their development to screens and strangers. That’s not a lifestyle choice. That’s abdication. The game doesn’t matter. The act of showing up to their world and engaging on their terms matters. And a huge number of parents are simply not doing it. And yeah, you can substitute games with almost any other non-screen activity, but you get my point.

Parents who don’t play games with their kids are failing them.

Ticket to Ride is the most underrated teaching tool in board gaming. Nobody talks about how perfectly it introduces the concept of blocking, opportunity cost, and hidden objectives to someone who’s never thought about any of those things. It’s not a beginner game. It’s a brilliant one.

Adulthood didn’t take your friendships. You stopped showing up and called it adulthood. We have collectively agreed that losing touch with people is just what happens when you grow up — as if friendship were a phase rather than a practice. But the people who maintain deep friendships into their forties and fifties didn’t get lucky. They kept showing up. They made the call. They hosted the thing. They drove the distance. Adulthood didn’t take your friendships. Inertia did. And inertia is a choice, even when it doesn’t feel like one.

Screen time restrictions for kids are insane when board games exist. We limit children’s screen time and then hand them nothing to replace it with. Meanwhile a well-chosen board game teaches reading comprehension, arithmetic, strategic planning, emotional regulation, and social negotiation simultaneously. The fact that pediatricians issue screen time guidelines but not board game prescriptions is a cultural failure of genuinely historic proportions.

Game nights are one of the last spaces where phones are still socially unacceptable. We’ve normalized phones at dinners, movies, even conversations. But something about sitting around a game still makes pulling your phone out feel rude. I think that’s worth protecting, and I don’t think we talk about how rare it is.
