The number one thing I wish all parents knew is that helping your little one learn to fall asleep and back to sleep on their own will solve a majority of your sleep struggles. I cannot say this enough.

⭐️ But most parents of newborns are surprised when I tell them that practicing independent sleep can start as early as 4 weeks old. After four months, I like to move into the realm of formal sleep training.

‼️ Why does independent sleep matter?

Well, when your baby knows how to put themselves to sleep and back to sleep they are able to connect sleep cycles. Sleep cycles start to change around 4 months and babies will start briefly waking up after every sleep cycle, about every 50 minutes. Sometimes the sleep pressure is high and they will sleep right though. Other times they will look for what put them to sleep to put them back to sleep. So if you are rocking your baby to sleep that’s what they will need to fall back to sleep. What this looks like is your baby waking every 1-3 hours all night long. But when your baby can put themselves back to sleep they can connect sleep cycles which is what leads to a consolidated night sleep.

🙌 If you’re struggling to help your baby learn this skill on their own that’s where a sleep coach comes in. My plans and resources are meant to empower so parents are making decisions from a place of empowerment, not desperation.

It’s never too early or too late to establish healthy sleep habits.

✨Here are my top 5 tips for better sleep before the holidays:

1. Set up a flexible routine- following an eat, play, sleep routine during the day can help you not only predict what your baby needs at any given time, it will help set your nights up for success by ensuring adequate feedings, active wake time and good naps during the day.

2. Fill the tank- making sure your baby is eating every 2.5-3 hours will help make sure they’re getting full feeds during the day to help eliminate the need to eat at night.

3. Practice the first nap in the crib- naps tend to develop in order with the first nap of the day generally the easiest to establish. I always recommend practicing the first nap in the crib and when that feels easy moving on to the second etc. The other naps can happen anyway you’d like!

4. Implement a bedtime routine- a consistent and predictable bedtime routine helps cue your baby’s brain that sleep is coming. It can be as simple as entering the nursery, putting on pyjamas, feeding, book or song, sleep sack or swaddle, into the crib, turn on the white noise machine and lights out.

5. Help your baby learn how to fall asleep by themselves- this alone will help solve the majority of your sleep struggles. When your baby can fall asleep on their own it means they are able to connect sleep cycles, which is what leads to a consolidated night’s sleep. When they don’t have this skill, when they naturally wake up after a sleep cycle, they will look for whatever put them to sleep to put them back to sleep.

Generally when you hire a sleep consultant, whether you have a 10 week old or a 10 month old the methods they will present you with when it comes to helping your little one learn to fall asleep and back to sleep on their own is the same.

✨Not that there is anything wrong with that, but there is another way and it starts from the beginning.

✨Instead of waiting for the wheels to fall off or a regression to hit or being so sleep deprived you can’t take it anymore, you can help your little one lay a strong and healthy sleep foundation from day one.

✨When you do that your baby will naturally lengthen their stretch of sleep at night until they’re sleeping through the night and naps will start to lengthen all on their own.

✨If you have a baby between 0-16 weeks using a soothing ladder means practicing this skill on a pace that feels comfortable to you and your little one, while enjoying all the contact naps and baby snuggles.

✨This is the method I used with both my girls and I can tell you we’ve had a couple of off nights, but overall they sleep through regressions, teething, sickness and other milestones. The key is helping your little one learn to fall asleep and back to sleep on their own.

✨My newborn guide covers this as well as how to set up your days, how to follow a flexible routine and so much more.

Those first few days and even weeks when you bring your newborn home can feel like survival mode.

✨If you feel yourself wondering if or when you’ll ever sleep again, these are my top tips for setting a healthy sleep foundation.

✅Offer feedings every 2 1/2 to 3 hours to help fill up the tank during the day, which will help with longer stretches of sleep at night.
✅Follow eat, play, sleep to not only help take the guessing work out of what your baby needs, but it also helps ensure your little one is getting active wake time and enough daytime calories, which leads to better nights.
✅Practice laying your little one down for the first nap of the day and bedtime in their sleeping space. With newborns, it’s all about practice.
✅At four weeks start using the soothing ladder in my newborn sleep shaping guide to help your little one learn to fall asleep and back to sleep on their own. Learning this skill helps consolidate sleep, leading to longer and better stretches of sleep at night.

Around four months there is a major change in sleep cycles which is when parents usually come to me because their baby starts waking up every couple of hours at night.

✨It’s known as the four month sleep regression and you may find that what worked before no longer works now.

✨The number one thing that is going to help is helping your baby learn to fall asleep and back to sleep on their own. This helps your little one connect sleep cycles, which helps consolidate sleep.

✨Other things that can help:

✅ Following age appropriate wake windows and a consistent bedtime routine will help prevent your little one from fighting sleep.

✅ Typically at four months your little one should be taking about 4 naps a day, but 3-5 is normal. Short naps can still be common. By 5 months you want to start aiming for 3 naps a day.

✅ Keep daytime sleep under 4.5 hours and capping naps at 2 hours will make sure they aren’t getting too much day sleep which can interfere with nights.

✅ Most babies at this age do best with a 7-8 p.m. bedtime. Some do better with an 8-10 p.m. bedtime closer to 5 months. If it’s working for you, don’t change it!
