UPDATE:
There are a few spots left in Level 1, so if you were thinking about registering, now is the time!
The Level 2 course starts in mid-Oct and has a few spots left as well. Level 2 builds on the skills introduced in Level 1. Now that students have the basics of sewing down, we can begin looking at what goes into making clothes that fit & sewing with knit fabrics. Mending & alternations will also be introduced. What we make will based on students' preferences.
This doc has more info about both Level 1 and Level 2 courseshttps://cca-acc.ca/wp-content/uploads/ImportantInfoSewFab-2025-08-12.pdf

Want to learn how to sew? Or need a refresher? Register for my Sew Fabulous - Sewing Machine Fundamentals - Level 1 course for adults https://cca-acc.ca/program/sew-fabulous-sewing-machine-fundamentals-level-1-fall-2025/
It runs for 6 weeks Sept 10 - Oct 15 at the Canterbury Community Centre 2185 Arch St on Wed from 6:30 - 9 pm through the Canterbury Community Association. You get to learn on your own sewing machine which means when you get home it's much easier to continue your projects because you know where all the buttons are. Max class size is 6 students.
The first project we'll make is a pennant banner. It's a fantastic quick sew that you can keep simple or fancy it up. Perfect showcase for sentimental fabric scraps, salvaged clothes, decorator samples, & vintage textiles. I also show you how to adapt these techniques to making earrings.
Big theme is sustainability, how to make use of what you've already got. Being resourceful. Having fun being creative. Developing skills & knowledge to do your own thing.
Lessons will focus on the basics of setting up a sewing machine; sewing straight seams and curves; and, exploring a variety of fabrics, tools & supplies. Students will learn how to: choose the right fabric for a given project; prep fabric; cut with scissors and a rotary cutter; press vs iron; pin vs clip; glue baste; choose the correct needle and thread; select an appropriate stitch; understand when and how to finish edges; and, use interfacing when more structure is required.
Photos are of some of the projects we can choose to do together in class: pennants, cleanser pads, cloth napkins, storage cubes, draw string bag, throw pillows, zip pouch, toiletry bag, tote bag. There are a couple of photos of projects completed by students in class.
I must remember to take more photos!
The idea though is that we make things that students want to sew so I send a survey before the course to understand what those are. I'll prep accordingly. So just because you don't see something here that you'd like to tackle, doesn't mean we won't to have a go in class.
