Bodies have always been different shapes and sizes, and while vintage clothing is more commonly found in smaller sizes, that’s not because fat folks didn’t exist… it’s because the clothing that people kept in the back of the closet, untouched, was the sentimental semi-formal dress that witnessed a first kiss, or the ‘aspirational’ jean shorts that were the end goal of the fad diet of the season.

While it’s true that our skeletons were generally smaller, and have only gotten bigger over the last 100 years because of improved nutrition and healthcare, this form of ‘selection bias’ means the clothing that was well preserved over the years is most often smaller in size.

But plus sized vintage clothing absolutely exists, it’s just that it’s a little bit harder to find. That’s where we come in 🤗

A snippet of the history of condoms, brought to you by this unused, mummified three pack we found in Kingston, Ont. At the time these were sold, they still would have been considered taboo and highly immoral.

FYI: Contraception wasn’t decriminalized until 1965 for married couples in the U.S., and 1972 for unmarried couples. In Canada, the Pierre Trudeau government made it legal to buy and sell contraceptives in 1969.
