All done! Today was my last scheduled cancer treatment. In December of 2022 I found an unusual (for me) lump in my right breast. After a mammogram and biopsy, it was diagnosed as invasive ductal carcinoma with metastasis. I began treatment for breast cancer in March. This year I’ve been through chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation.
It’s been a weird year. I’ve learned so much about myself, about who my people are, about bodies, cells, and the medical system. I hope I can retain some of things I put into practice this year, particularly around slowing down, resting, and prioritizing love and fun.
It feels strange to have energy and a brain that can multitask again. I very cautiously booked two holiday markets: The Neighbourhood Market .neighbourhood.market on Dec. 1 and the Focus Fair at the Theatre On King on Dec. 10. I’ll be debuting these Check Yourself Soaps at these markets. Each one features a variety of breast stamps, which are fun already, but can also serve as a reminder to check your breasts when you are in the shower or bath. That’s how I found my lump. There are a lot of good resources online on how to do a self exam, so go look them up, but I think one of the best things you can do is to get to know what’s normal for your body so you notice when something changes.
Thank you to my doctors and all of the medical staff at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre and Lakeridge Health Oshawa .health for taking such good care of me. Everyone I met was so kind and compassionate. I feel so incredibly lucky that I was able to access life-saving care so quickly and so close to home. I will be donating 50% of each Check Yourself Soap sale to the PRHC .
There isn’t a tonne of organized support in Peterborough for younger people with breast cancer. I was able to connect with some folks in my life who have dealt with the same thing and I found that so helpful. If you or someone you know is going through this process and wants to talk, I’m happy to share my story.
Hope to see you at a holiday market, at the Peterborough Regional Farmers’ Market or around town. Take care of yourselves! ❤
