To preserve the colour and softness of the flannel/cotton bibs or any cotton for that matter, you can do this by using cold water and 1/2 cup white vinegar for the initial wash. This will help keep pills
(balled-up fibers) from forming on your bibs. It will also set the color in the fabric to help resist fading. For future washings, continue to use cold water and a gentle detergent (i.e. Woolite), plus ½ cup white vinegar during the rinse cycle, but avoid the use of commercial liquid or rinse cycle fabric softeners, as this weakens the fabric. Using dryer sheets as a way to soften the fabric works much better, but if you dry your bibs on high heat it will wear out your sheets much faster - keep the heat low. Better yet, dry bibs on a line to reduce the chances of pills forming. Deal with stains promptly and pretreat stains without scrubbing. Scrubbing sets stains rather than removing them and can wear holes in the fabric that are difficult to repair.
