Today we’re celebrating 100 years of David Attenborough 🌿

For generations, he has helped children and adults alike fall in love with the natural world, encouraging curiosity, wonder and care for the planet we all share.

This quote feels especially important in childhood. The more time children spend outdoors noticing insects, planting seeds, playing in natural environments and caring for living things, the more connected they become to nature and to the world around them 🌳

Happy 100th birthday, David Attenborough.

What makes summer camp at That Blue Barn different?

It starts with the people. Our team is made up of adults—Ontario Certified Teachers, Early Childhood Educators, and experienced Forest and Nature School Practitioners—who know how to create meaningful experiences and make things genuinely fun. There’s intention behind what we do, but it never feels forced.

Then there’s the setting. Camp takes place on a hobby farm where children can move between forest trails, open fields, playground spaces, and time with animals. It’s a place that invites curiosity, independence, and a bit of adventure—while still offering air-conditioned indoor spaces when the summer heat hits.

It’s a balance that’s hard to find: structured but flexible, creative but grounded, and always rooted in real connection—to the land, to each other, and to the experience itself.

We still have a few spots left in our one-week camps.

Yes, I still make my kids’ lunches.

They’re almost sixteen and seventeen. They could probably do it themselves. And some mornings, when I hear a hint of complaint, I feel the sting of resentment rise up.

But I keep doing it.

They leave early — sometimes in the dark — for a long commute to high school. They wear their uniforms, carry full course loads, commit to their teams and clubs, and take their responsibilities seriously. Their days are long. Often they come home after the sun has already set.

They are learning how to manage a full life. And they’re doing it well.

I can’t take care of them forever. I know that. The years are moving quickly.

But right now, in this season, I can make sure they open their bags at lunchtime and find something nourishing. Something prepared with intention. Something that says, “I’m in your corner.”

So yes — I still make their lunches.

Not because they can’t.
But because, for now, I can.
