The Merovingians reigned over Western Europe for two centuries, but the true fortune lay in avoiding death at the hands of one’s own brother, father, or step mother.

Their stories started after the fall of the Roman Empire when the Germanic tribes called the Franks emerged from the ashes of Rome’s former glory. Those Franks had gained rapidly power with their axes but also their alliance with the catholics bishops.

Over its four centuries of existence, the Franks were ruled by two dynasties: the Merovingians, followed later by the Carolingians. At the end of the 5th century, the Franks were united for the first by Clovis the First, often called the "Father of France." It was he who established the power of the Merovingian dynasty.

The Saxons, along with the Angles and Jutes, were the groups who migrated to the British Isles in the 5th century in the same time of the visigoths in the balkan revolt and sack rome which provoked the crossing of Rhine where a several other germanic tribes likes Suebi, Vandals and Burgundians invade the West Roman Empire. The 5th century can be resume by the failure of the west Roman to retake control and the establishment of the germanic kingdom.
The kingdom of the Goths, the Franks and the Vandals became rich and powerful for centuries. The saxons, angles and Jute kingdoms remain poor and violent long time after the fall of Roman Empire.

The Vandals were one of several Germanic tribes that crossed the Rhine in 407. After the Germanic invasion, some Vandals established a kingdom in North Africa through brutal means and became Mediterranean pirates. They also sacked Rome in 455 AD so harshly that the term "vandalism" originates from their actions. Initially, they were hostile to Roman traditions and institutions. However, after many decades, they embraced Roman culture and preserved some aspects of Roman society in North Africa.
