Hello lovely! Thank you for taking the time to view my FB page and read about my brand BE'wildher. Chances are you've made it this far because you want to shop local and support a Canadian made brand. So much good karma to you for that! Who am I to think starting another clothing brand is a good idea? Actually it's probably the worst idea ever, but it's been my dream since I was in grade 7, and if I am anything at all, it is stubborn. When my high-school ran out of sewing and art classes for myself to take they had to start inventing new one. I refused to try anything else. After staying up for three days straight to complete the sewing projects my design school teacher told me not to attempt, I achieved my diploma with a 6.0 GPA and that years overall designer award. Why fitness apparel? Because I want to inspire others to feel more joy and have more fun while pursuing their health and fitness goals. Having learned the hard way, there are a few habits I do not support:
- Obsessing over weight. Throw out the scale, you'll be so much happier.
- Obsessing over food. If you have enough time on your hands to plan meals for a week, you have enough time to plan a new adventure or develop a new passion. Maybe that home business you wanted to start?!
- Crash dieting that leads to binge eating. Eat to feel good. Eat healthy for the energy it gives you, listen when your body says it's hungry and stop when it's full. Eat a piece of cake if it's what you really want, don't substitute for fat free garbage.
- Comparing. This is the worst and hardest habit to break! Stop comparing yourself to others. Nobody can be themselves better than they can, just like no one can be you better than you can. So, who are you? What do you really want and where do you really want to be? If this question is overwhelming, forget the bigger picture and just take the next right step. Winter is here, and as I pull out my old gear—patched with duct tape and scarred by wood stove burn holes—if you too are thinking it’s time for an upgrade, allow me to introduce you to .outdoor. They are a local Squamish company founded by people who truly understand life in the backcountry.

They create custom-designed, made-to-order outdoor wear that keeps you safe, dry, and ready for adventure. The coolest part? Their website has this amazing custom tool where you can design your jacket, and it updates live as you pick your colors, zippers, and other details. It’s so fun to watch your vision come to life!

What I also love is their sustainable approach—by making everything to order, they avoid the waste of extra inventory or unsold stock. So if you’re looking to upgrade your winter gear, skip the scrolling and check them out. You’ll get something built just for you, and you’ll be supporting a smarter way to shop.

It’s been a long time coming, and honestly, I’ve been sitting on this idea for way too long. My brand, Bewildher, was built on the dream of being sustainable, ethical, and locally made, but in the end, the costs were just too high.

I’ve since wanted to use this space to shine a light on other brands fighting the good fight—those striving to be ethical, sustainable, and survive the ever-changing world we live in. But without the time to bring my grand vision to life, I’ve kept putting it off. Today, I’m reminding myself: this is Instagram, not pre-planned-agram.

Without further ado and definitely without finesse, here are ten environmentally conscious brands based in North America that I hope you’ll checkout and support. These businesses deserve to thrive in tough economic times, and every little bit helps:

People will forget what you did. They’ll forget what you said, but they’ll never forget the way you made them feel.

I can’t explain it better than Simon Sinek when people ask why I’ve gone through all this effort, first in operating a sustainable brand and now trying to close it gracefully.

I’m fine until I read the comments or someone asks me how I’m doing 🫠.

Your messages have been moving me to tears and giving me all the feels.

I’ll never forget all the love and support I’ve felt during this journey, thank you for being there for me. 🙏💛🐝

📣 Q: What is so hard about being an entrepreneur?

A: Every little thing. 🛒 Let me take you through what it took just to start shipping orders this week. Strap in!

While away housesitting on the island last week, I thought getting a prepaid credit card for purchasing shipping labels would be a breeze. I was wrong. Four stores later, I finally found a card that seemed reloadable (or so I thought). After hours of frustration, failed purchases, website visits, app downloads, and some elevator music, I was finally able to make my first label purchase.

Fast forward to using up the balance and wanting to reload. Surprise! The card wasn't reloadable, despite what the packaging claimed. Cue the *facepalm* moment. A refund? Sure, but I would have to trek back to Nanaimo and confront the misleading merchant. Not feasible.

Frustration at its peak, I turned to my bank. Automated responses led me on a merry dance to the mobile app. No appointments till mid-September? That's not gonna work. Off to the bank branch I go, only to be told they don't offer secured cards. My tiredness might've made me a bit short with the teller – if you're reading this, sorry! 😅

A deep breath and an hour of research later, salvation arrives in the form of Canada Post. They have reloadable Visa cards. *Eureka!* Time to get one. Oh, but my debit card won't cooperate with their machine. Decline, decline, and more declines. After a trek back to the bank, I return armed with cold hard cash. Take that technology!

Finally, after an epic saga of confusion, frustration, and determination, I'm back on track. 🚚 Orders, your time has come! Thank you, amazing customers, for your patience through this rollercoaster. 🎢 Your support means the world as I navigate the entrepreneur's adventure. 🌟💼

Saving Small Businesses with Compassion and Coffee ☕️

When faced with the inevitable closure of my entrepreneurial journey, I heard the same refrain: "It's just business." But it's more than that. It's about the dreams, the struggles, and the relationships forged along the way. I've been on both sides, as a customer left hanging and as a small business owner fighting to survive.

I know the feeling of being let down when you've invested your hard-earned money. And now, I find myself in the painful position of closing down my business while owing customers and suppliers, small businesses already grappling with unpaid invoices from other closures.

In a sea of advice to avoid the emotional turmoil with “it’s just business”, I’ve chosen a different path. I connected with my inner purpose, asking myself, "What do these women want?" The resounding answer was clear: "The ability to decide for themselves." And with that clarity, I embarked on a journey to face my customers, my suppliers, and myself.

The response to my transparent email was a mix of heartbreak and inspiration. A single mother saving diligently, students striving to make ends meet, wildfire survivors and loyal customers extending their unwavering support – their stories moved me to tears. Amid the hardship, kindness has prevailed.

Last night, I reached out to my suppliers, fearing their reaction. Their empathy surprised me. My main supplier, a duo of determined women running their print shop, understood. They, too, navigate uncertain times.

A small gesture can make a big difference. Join me in donating the cost of a coffee ($1-$5) to support my suppliers and preserve our foundation for the future. Link in bio.

Please share this post to amplify our message – let's redefine "just business" with humanity and resilience.

Thank you for standing up for entrepreneurship and showing that kindness matters. Together, we shape a brighter future, one coffee at a time.

🌿 Navigating Closure with Gratitude and Hope 🌿

Dear Bee-loved Bewildher Community,

Today, I share a message heavy with emotions, one I never hoped to utter. Our path is now defined by economic hardships – inflation, rising costs, and declining revenue. With a mix of sadness and determination, I must announce the impending closure of Bewildher.

The journey we've shared, your unwavering support – they've been nothing short of extraordinary. The trust you've bestowed upon Bewildher humbles me, and I regret that circumstances have led us here. I wish the story were different, but I must face the reality.

Months have been spent fighting to sustain our beloved brand. Hope kept me going, but time revealed the winds of change weren't in our favor. Losses mounted, cash flow waned. The truth is clear: our current path is unsustainable.

To those with pre-orders, I apologize for any disruptions. I'm navigating this solo after letting go of my team, and your patience means everything.

I know many want to help, to keep Bewildher afloat. Your willingness warms my heart. But financial challenges block our path. The economic outlook doesn't promise a quick fix. Our business model faces obstacles in this climate. Price points and inflation have created a divide discounts can't bridge.

I come with a different request. A plea to help me close this chapter gracefully, to ease the impact on pre-order customers and loyal suppliers.

Here's where I need help:

1. Shop My Closing Sale: Our final sale will help refund pre-orders.

2. Support My Local Suppliers: A GoFundMe, overseen by a CPA, will help settle supplier accounts. No funds retained by Bewildher. Link to donate: https://gofund.me/22a13b02 🙏

3. Creative Empowerment: An Etsy shop is coming, offering legging patterns, join my contact list 📝

Bewildher was my heart for a decade. As I close the doors empty-handed, gratitude and hope fill my heart. What truly mattered can't be priced: the ethos, creativity, and pattern knowledge. The essence will live on, even as the name may one day change.

Supporting me now preserves bonds with suppliers for my future rebuild.

Thank you for being on this journey,
With heartfelt gratitude,
Nadine 💛🐝
