Woman's National Costume from Alsunga

The costume consists of a skirt with attached contrasting bodice, vest, shirt, unmarried woman’s head-piece, and sash.

The skirt is hand-woven and finely gathered. The fabric is attached in a high-waisted fashion to a multicolored striped bodice.
The vest is made of black wool fabric. Bands of red, yellow and green embroidery using the herringbone stitch embellish the front. The shirt is of white linen fabric. The wide cuffs have white-on-white embroidery, the central design element is the sign of the morning star “Auseklis”. The head-piece is appropriate for an unmarried woman. The bronze band is edged with small, slightly domed discs.

$575 Canadian.

This coronet is based on the patterns of Užava, on the west coast of Kurzeme, Latvia to be worn with a national costume from the region. The height is 3 inches and the inside measurement around the coronet is 21 1/2 inches.

Different coloured and sized glass beads have been sewn onto fulled wool. The same wool is used on the inside of the coronet to cover a hard inner lining. The coronet is in very good condition, the beadwork is all intact, but there is very slight wear visible on the edge of the gold ribbon.

This Latvian sash is hand woven using the back-strap pick up technique and is suitable for a man or a woman. The pattern design is achieved by stylized floral motifs in shades of red and blue on a grey background.

The sash measures 117 inches in length plus has a 2 1/2 inch twisted warp end fringe at each end. It is 2 inches wide. It is in excellent condition. $75 Canadian.

Unmarried woman's headdress from Kurzeme

This headdress is specific to the parishes of Alsunga, Ventspils, Kuldiga and Renda. The bronze band is flanked by bronze sequin-like small disks, on a firm base covered with red woollen fabric.

The costume consists of a skirt with attached contrasting bodice, vest, shirt, unmarried woman’s head-piece, and sash. The skirt is hand-woven, black cotton warp, red and blue wool weft. The vest is made of black wool fabric. Bands of red, yellow and green embroidery utilising the herringbone stitch embellish the front. The shirt is white linen fabric.
