This is one of my best finds not just because it was FREE, but because I met the sweetest and most generous couple in the process. The story goes like this...
I'm scouring Marketplace as I do, nightly, when I see an ad for a beautiful rug that's free. It's so gorgeous that I make my husband read the ad as well, just to be sure I'm not imagining it. Nope. I'm correct. It's free. The caveat - we have to pick it up immediately.
We jump in the car and into traffic and head north. Good thing I married a man who's always up for an adventure.
We pull up to a lovely suburban home and spot the carpet on the porch. A friendly young woman from next door pops out and introduces herself and explains that it is her neighbor's rug, who isn't on social media and that she had posted it on their behalf. It takes all three of us to get the rug into the car, it's so heavy. I can't really see it as it's rolled up but I just know it's gorgeous. IYKYK.
Suddenly, a regal older woman steps onto the porch and begins to thank us for coming to get it (thank us????) and invites us in. Her greeting and invitation was so warm we had to say yes. She explains the carpet sat in her front sitting room and it was too heavy and too difficult for her to vacuum anymore which is why she was giving it away.
She then introduces us to her husband, who insists we come into the kitchen for a coffee. I don't drink coffee. At all. But I have to say yes and so I find myself actually enjoying an espresso and homemade biscotti, as the wonderful hosts and my husband talk all things food. He is in heaven and I am amazed I wanted to know which brand of beans and machine they own.
Before long, it is time for us to go, but not without a jar of our host's homemade tomato sauce. We hit the absolute Marketplace jackpot.
Needless to say, I followed up the visit with a thank you letter in the mail and my faith in humanity restored.
