Dancers, did you know the average life expectancy of a pointe shoe is between 10-20 hours?! 😵
While pointe shoes can’t last forever, there is SOME wiggle-room when it comes to how long your shoe will last. We see a lot of parents that are surprised when a dancer is told its time for a new pair because their pointe shoes are dead after 6 months (thanks Mom and Dad!) It can be hard to understand something becoming unusable after 6 months, but that’s actually a really good run for a shoe! 👍🏼
It’s important to remember that pointe shoes are mostly all handmade and variations are a natural part of a bespoke product. This means that just because your first pair lasted 6 months, your next pair might not 🤷🏼♀️
It’s not uncommon for a dancer to have a shoe last longer, especially if they’re a beginner or dancing on pointe for half an hour once a week. Most beginners end up replacing their shoe because they’ve grown, not because it died (this means your first pair will look almost perfect, making them a great keepsake!) 🩰✨
However, a dancer can also be a ☠️Shoe Killer☠️ meaning a pair of pointe shoes may last only a few hours or weeks. There are a few things that can turn a dancer into a Shoe Killer:
⚰️ Making the shoe do the work, rather than relying on their own strength.
⚰️ Sweaty feet (don’t forget to wash your toe pads!)
⚰️ The shoe is too soft and they might need to move into a harder shoe
Here are some tips for helping your shoes last longer!
⭐️ Rotating between pairs
⭐️ Jet Glue (checkout our post for more tips on using it!)
⭐️ Let them fully air out after class
