After talking with a bunch of incredible artists at this past weekend, I thought I’d share a bit more about my inspiration, and the concepts around this last shoot.
This table belonged to my parents. As a little kid, standing eye level with the carvings, I always found it to be super mysterious, and evocative of some kind of story or history I couldn’t yet understand, that I filed away for further thought “when I grew up” and could understand. It was so different from the “kids” tables and school tables, and even our other family furniture I was used to that was much less ornate.
Over time, it ended up stored, folded up, covered in dust, in the basement of our family home for many years. Until last year when I decided it was the perfect addition to my “secret ritual” shoot, where I ended up creating the mysterious backstory I thought it held as a child. Now it sits in my own living room.
Mystery, the unknown, and nostalgia are a few of the key themes that influence my creative process.
