AN INVITATION TO UPCYCLE // June 22-25
[Part 1 of 2]
Context: Over the past 4/5 years, while living between Guatemala, Nicaragua, the US and Canada I’ve been exploring circular design methods and business models. (A lot of reworking second hand, and designing new types of supply chains). Last year, while creating the Re/WORKED Circular Design Summit supported by the United Nations hosted Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network, we brought together 60 leaders in Circular fashion who are working on their own questions and innovative solutions to come together to explore how we can partner to propel new ideas forward. What we learned/know so far is that no business models exist as blueprints for the circular economy, and that as a collective, we will be reliant on trial and error through experimentation and collaboration to get there. It is my belief that operating at a grassroots level allows for agility and an opportunity to learn from a wider range of trial and errors, which serves as a basis for significance in 'An Invitation to Upcycle'.
Nicaragua and Guatemala have been important homes for me while exploring new circular business models because millions of pounds of used clothes from the US get shipped there each month. Living there and other parts of the world where we send off our unwanted second hand items, such as India, has provided an understanding of the second hand clothing supply chain’s cultural and environmental impact and significance in the regions, and has underscored the crisis of waste colonialism.
One simple factor in building with the planet at heart is: ideally, to use materials that already exist- in your locality- w/o extracting new resources from our Earth. On this note, I’m taking time for a pivot from reworking and exploring second hand clothing systems in Central America, to recreating from our inventory pieces - and in various formats.

Throughout the sample sale, [where all collection and archival pieces will be 30%-80% off] I’ll be working to design custom garments for a few of our community members using this principle. We’ll be providing 3 formats to engage with upcycling on…
