Chinedesign

Chinedesign Style and Fashion Chinedesign was founded by Chinedu Ukabam about eight years ago.

Also known as hip-hop emcee/producer Eye + Eye, his foray into the fashion scene began in October 2003. Chinedu produced a handful of T-shirts to promote the upcoming release of his "Love.Life.Music" album. Without any prior exposure or retail distribution, the "Love.Life.Music" shirt sold over 300 units in Toronto alone; most of which were customized to the customer's specifications. Today, Chine

design[apparel] has expanded from just graphic T's to skirts, dresses and jackets which are widely available in Toronto, Vancouver and Nova Scotia. In 2008, Chinedu joined the designer co-op store The Fashion District and has recently relocated to Paris for inspiration and to pursue further studies in the fashion business. Born in the UK and raised in Nigeria, Dubai and Canada, Chinedu is inspired by his vibrant and eclectic merge of cultures. His clothing has been featured in magazines such as Eye Weekly and Sway, on television shows such as Entertainment Tonight, Divas and Dimes and Da Kink and in films such as Charles Officer's "Nurse.Fighter.Boy". Chinedesign counts Jarvis Church, K-OS, the late Baatin of Slum Village, UK rapper Ty, actor Ngozi Paul and theater director Weyni Mengesha as some of its ardent fans.

The new Chinedesign summer collection that we gave you a sneak peek of back in February at the Royal Ontario Museum is launching today! For AfroChic Cultural Arts Exhibit, Chinedu will be exclusively debuting the new collection titled “ILU” which means proverb in his native Igbo language. Incorporating Chinedu's original silk prints and handmade Nigerian fabrics, it is inspired by the power and wisdom of proverbs and the iconography and symbolism of Asafo flags from Ghana.
AfroChic Cultural Arts Exhibit will be hosted by Amanda Parriss of CBC Arts who will also be conducting an interactive session with Nigerian-American "Classic Man" Jidenna. Advance tickets are sold out already but there will be door tickets. See you there! And for those of you that can't make it today, stay tuned for the ILU lookbook!

Two weeks ago, I curated a fashion-art exhibition in Toronto called Water Carry Me Go at both the Royal Ontario Museum and Harbourfront Centre. It featured 7 designers (including myself) from around the world who were commissioned to create pieces inspired by the theme of water. It has been an amazing experience to start Here are a few behind the scene photos by Jalani Morgan. This set is one in a series of four. For more from Set 1, click here: http://tinyurl.com/waterbts
