100% handmade, 100% merino wool, 100% warm She is proud to now be celebrating 10 years of making her living making things.

Julie is an award winning textile artist originally from the quiet shores of Lake Erie, now living and working in Toronto. A lover of the fibre arts since she was a child, she studied textiles at the Kootenay School of the Arts, a small and eclectic school in the mountains of southeastern British Columbia, where she learned about the wonders of boiled wool from a fellow student. Aside from hat-mak

ing, Julie is passionate about natural dyeing (with plants and bugs and barks and such). She teaches dye classes at The Workroom in Toronto. Boiled wool is a process where an item is knit loose and large, then shrunk (felted) to create a new fabric – one that is seamless, durable and super duper warm. More simply put, it’s just like when you accidentally shrink your wool sweater in the washing machine, except that we do it on purpose. We use merino wool, which is soft and luxurious, never scratchy. The natural lanolin oils in the wool, and the thickness of the felt combine to make a hat that is fantastic in all kinds of weather - rain and snow will bead up on the hat, instead of soaking through. All of our products are handmade with care in Toronto by Julie and her fabulous team.

It’s time! To be honest, I have barely ever participated, but today I wore this (ridiculous) shirt to my kid’s school and had about a thousand comments on it, then started seeing everyone’s posts popping up, and figured it was a sign.

So ya, I made a shirt from the Kona colour chart. That you’re supposed to hang up to help you choose colours, or like, display in your quilt shop. Kind of silly, but people love it!

My first time trying seed snails and so far I’m impressed. Still lots of time to get Japanese Indigo seedlings started this year if you want to try for yourself. Both the seedlings and the final pots don’t need much space!

Mexico appreciation post #1

We’ve been home from Mexico for a week and I’m still processing… how much we loved it, how many photos we took, how I want to go back already.

I didn’t know where to begin, so why not with….walls, which I took a silly amount of shots of. I just adore how gorgeous even the simplest of spaces are. We were in San Miguel de Allende, which everyone told me was beautiful….but it’s hard to describe (or capture) how true this is. The colour, the light, there is something truly special about this city.

I mean, check out that Sports Bar?!?

Finished the colourwork section of my sweater! It has been so delightful to watch the colours roll off my knitting needles, through the grey days of winter.

All dyed with leftovers from my natural dye and indigo workshops last summer.

Now I just have to knit grey for ages…. But that’s okay cause spring is around the corner. Even saw my first snow drops today, yay!

Taught a private natural dye class today and our aim was to get many different shades from just a few dyebaths.

With four dyes - cochineal, madder, weld and logwood, we got 12 shades. An alum bath, an iron post mordant and an exhaust bath for each.

Not sure which is my favourite, but I think it might be (surprise, surprise) the cochineal. But maybe (for a change) the cochineal + iron (top left in the third slide)

Which one do you like best?

Indigo seeds for the 2026 growing season are in stock!

I love this photo because it shows just how easy Japanese Indigo (persicaria tinctoria) is to grow. You don’t need a huge garden or even a garden at all. This plant does really well in containers, and in fact, a huge amount of the indigo I grow is in a little row of pots along the brick wall side of my house.

It wants some sun, it wants some water, but honestly, it’s not fussy at all. And it yields the most magical, wonderful shades of blue. How extraordinary is it to grow your own colour! Time to find out?

Finally getting around to choosing colours for my (pattern by ). It uses 18 shades for the colourwork yoke, so back in the summer when I was teaching natural dye and indigo classes, I prepped a bunch of mini skeins to use up any leftover (exhaust) baths.

I am nothing if not predictable, so after playing with different colour combos and pairings……I’m going rainbow. I can’t help myself. I just love the ROYGBIV!

Swipe for which dyes were used for which colours, my quality control inspector doing her job, and the first few rows of colourwork knitting (which make me very happy)

Bows are absolutely everywhere these last couple of years.

I have an almost 12 year old daughter, and she literally has bows, either real or drawn, on everything. We’re talking jeans, water bottle, binder, earrings, everything.

And I resisted the bandwagon for ages, then realized that a velvet bow on a wool hat is a classic combo. That I was just being silly.

So here is the latest hat style, just in time for .

Come find me at booth D19. I’ll have classic hats, 18 gajillion colours of mittens, and more.
