New post added at Poppy's Petites - DIY Doll Carrying Case
Woohoo! FINALLY!
My own little doll carrying case!
I've been longing for one for years, but they are always hundreds of $$$ and just not worth it so when I saw this case at the Salvation Army for $4.99 I had butterflies
A man with a strange mustache was carefully examining it when I spotted it, so I pretended to be interested in some large utensils nearby and then I saw him put it down and walk away and I snatched it.
The case really did not need many modifications, and it only took me a few hours to get it the way I wanted.
I actually have no idea what it used to be for, but I added the doll harnesses and the wardrobe rod.
I measured the inside of the area where I wanted to put the dolls, and then cut out a large hard piece of illustration board and then marked on the board where I wanted the holes for the ribbons to keep the dolls secure.
I dotted the spots with a pencil, and then hammered a nail through the parts to start a hole. Obviously if I had had a power drill handy, I would have simply drilled the holes in a matter of minutes, maybe even seconds (trying not to focus on that...).
After I had nailed holes through the board, I used a metal and pointy emery board to carve out the holes better.
Once this was done, I sprayed the board with a spray adhesive and then adhered a piece of scrap book paper that I had measured to be the same size.
Once the scrapbook paper was adhered, I repoked and sanded the holes, then put the ribbons through and secured them to the back of the board with just scotch tape.
I tested the ribbons to make sure they were able to harness the dolls properly, and once I was satisfied, I used a strong adhering material called 'Weldbond' to attach the doll harness board to the back of the box.
For the wardrobe rod on the left, I actually just used a stem from a FR doll stand, and then used a hot glue gun to fix it into the box.
After that, I lined the drawer that came with the box with a red felt and then filled the drawer with teeny shoe boxes filled with footwear, a small hat box and little jewelry boxes with some basic accessories.
I put the dolls in basic vintage Mattel lingerie to give the box a more pronounced 'dress-up' theme to it
The box is hard enough to protect the dolls and contents properly but also very lightweight and easy to carry around.
The box can also lay on it's side rather than upright without disturbing the contents.
Honestly, where you might ask, am I going to be taking this little case? Well, ideally one day to an IT convention of course, but maybe in the meantime it will just be a cute little box for me to peek inside and titter at (LOL).
