We started tracking styles and turns out our chelseas are just a tad more popular than the Russells. Makes sense — no laces. Easier to pull on and off.

It's been a bit since we've shared what's coming off the production rack. Here's some of what we've been making lately.

A Russell boot with a rough-out vamp, chestnut quarters and counter, and two speed hooks.

A Chelsea in red on a matching red club sole.

A custom double monk boot in ox blood bison and shark.

In a way, HD Russell began in Tehran, in a family where four of Davoud's uncles were cordwainers and the craft was passed on hand to hand. Davoud learned patternmaking when schools were forced to close during the Iranian Revolution, and it was his brother Russell who encouraged him to build his shoe business.

Years later we lost Russell. But Davoud has always felt him in the workshop, and we carry his name above the door.

Davoud came to Canada in 1990 and continued to learn and make. In December 2019, we opened these doors on the busy corner of 1st and Nanaimo — weeks before the pandemic - and we're still here.

Today, every pair is made right here, by hand, one at a time. Same craft, same heart, just a little further down the road.

It's the middle of summer and knee-high boots are probably the last thing on your mind — but we wanted to share these two pairs.

Same style, made for two different people, so no two measurements match. Different heights, different calf widths, each shaft built to fit the leg it was made for. Something off-the-shelf boots rarely accommodate.

One in classic black, the other in chestnut brown, each with a full-length zip on the inside of the shaft for easy on and off. Both Goodyear welted by hand, so when the soles eventually wear, they can be replaced.

Our boots are built to last a lifetime. These ones were built for two.

A few years ago, a customer purchased a pair of Russell boots — whiskey predator with bison quarters. He wore them only a handful of times before they found their way to the back of his closet. His son had always admired the boots, hoping one day he'd grow into them.

He never did... so his father brought them back to us. Davoud did a full re-craft — keeping the leather uppers only — to rebuild the boot to a smaller size.

To anyone else, they're a beautiful pair of boots. To father and son, they're something special.
