This Juneteenth, let’s talk about Sneaker Culture. It is something that nearly every human’s life is enriched by. Even your dad’s Monarch IIs were reinvented by prolific sneaker designer .

1: Black youth have always been tastemakers. Here are some things that wouldn’t exist the way they do without Black influence/creation: Fashion. Nail art, hair design, and makeup. Music. Dance. Art. Literature. Slang. Social media. Small business prosperity. Athletics. Medicine. Math. Social security systems. The list goes on.

2: The Black connection to basketball began in the same time frame as the release of the Chuck Taylor Highs in 1917. Basketball became an avenue of empowerment through the formation of teams at HBCUs and all Black professional teams and . NBA teams integrated Black athletes in 1950 and, by the 60s, most NBA athletes were Black.

Sneakers emerged rapidly into mainstream consciousness beyond athletic contexts via the flourishing hip-hop movement in the 70s-80s. During this time, Nike was pumping out ball shoes with classic silhouettes that you likely own now (although likely won’t hoop in):
👟Blazers: 1973
👟AF1: 1982
👟Jordan 1: 1985
👟Jordan 3: 1988

3: Since the 70s, Sneaker brands such as Adidas and Nike have been making endorsement deals with popular athletes, specifically Black basketball stars, as a method to drive sales, suggesting that their shoes contributed to athletic performance. Since then, the use of Black bodies in advertisements continues to identify a product as elite and fashionable. The history of commodifying Black bodies is a whole topic on it’s own.

4: Everyone wears sneakers, but Blackness is often associated with street style and sneakers. Since the 70s, sneaker companies have catered to the “Black Juvenile Market” to be sure that sneakers would remain a priority in society’s consumeristic concerns.This, plus the significance of sneakers in Black expression, is causal to the prevalence of Black creators in the sneaker space today.
