I've been working through my first wave of clients since my soft launch. I'm so grateful for all the friends who have contacted me with projects or recommended me to their contacts, which has resulted in consultations and client work. Thank you all so much!

These are some photos of a recent alteration I completed for a friend who had a wedding to attend in Florida recently.

Swipe through to see how I took this ill fitting Shein dress and made her look like a bombshell! I recut the bodice, took it in a bit at the waist, and shortened the straps.

Have you got any impulse fast fashion purchases lying around which were dirt cheap but just fit poorly? I can tell you if they're worth salvaging and how they can be improved. Feel free to DM or email and I'd be happy to help with a consultation.

In film we work in smaller teams within the crew, so a seamstress will often be assigned to a specific cutter, what we call the pattern maker, in charge of specific costume builds assigned by the costume designer. I worked with Rosalie Lee on Grease, and our team was in charge of the character Olivia, in addition to Cynthia and Dottie (and a few other characters not in the trailer). We were assigned the task of recreating the iconic Pink Lady jackets as well.

Within the team, each seamstress gets assigned different things to work on. On a big build show, one person does not make everything. Often someone makes the skirt and the other person does the bodice for a dress, for example. It's a massive team effort and no matter how small the task is, when it's a good team, we work together. Even if it's jumping in to help sew on buttons or snaps!

Screenshots of some of the things I worked on:
1) Pink Lady jackets (I did make two out of the four, for the first set)
2) Olivia's red skirt (I made a lot of skirts for her)
3) Olivia's entire outfit - black blouse and skirt
4) Cynthia's plaid shirt on the left
5) Dottie's sailor dress

First trailer dropped for Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies! I worked on this for the first three episodes last year, with cutter Rosalie Lee. It was a challenging project and we only stayed for three episodes before moving on to Percy Jackson, but some of the costumes we got to build were fun and adorable.

This is what I call getting to sew "cake"—there aren't always a lot of opportunities to build bright, colourful, whimsical historical costumes. I'll post some screenshots of things in the trailer which I worked on tomorrow.

Random fun detail: They used the high school I went to as a teen to shoot as the exteriors of Rydell High. 😂

Last December, I finished working on season one of the new upcoming Percy Jackson series for Disney+. This is the teaser trailer which was released last year.

It was a really great show to work on with such a great crew, not only in the Costumes department but also all other departments.

Looking forward to watching this when it's released. There are some fun costumes we got to build for the series, blending fantasy with contemporary clothes. I got to check out a few of the set builds in person, it was so cool!

We would get photos from the set crew when they were shooting and I'm just blown away by the work we all put into this show. The costumes together with the hair, make-up, prosthetics, special effects, set, lighting, etc, are some of the coolest things I've gotten a chance to build.

Really hope the show lives up to the hype!

Hi, my name is Caroline Cheng and this year I'm launching The Consulting Seamstress. I am now offering my services as a professional seamstress for friends, family, and the general public.

I'm available for commissions, custom work, alterations, and basically any kind of sewing services you are in need of! No project too small! Hems, mending and repairs, etc. I also have general textile art skills such as dyeing fabric and basics of hat making.

I've worked professionally as a seamstress and costumer in Vancouver since 2016 when I graduated from Capilano University's Costume for Stage and Screen program. I'm a full member of IATSE 891 and proud of the hard work I've endured to get this far.

I've contributed my work to a lot of film productions ranging from the superhero shows (Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, etc) to X-Files, The Twilight Zone, BH90210 revival, Schmigadoon, See, Van Helsing, and lots more. I've worked on some feature films such as GI Joe: Snake Eyes and Tully.

I've also worked in the fashion industry and one of my first jobs was at an alteration shop. I've taught classes on sewing and Ge**er CAD pattern drafting, and mentored private students in the past. Always open to taking on new students or teaching workshops.

Whew, who knew one could turn a lifetime of sewing into a career. (I've been sewing since I was 13!) I'm ready to try new things in the new year. Bring it on!
