You may have noticed a few changes on the block lately! 👀

Firstly, the City of Vancouver changed the parking regulations on our street. That’s right – you can now park outside Awl Together without hassle! The west side of our block on Odlum Dr., and the north side of William St. (between Odlum and Clark) are all now 2hr FREE parking. Previously, it could be challenging to get parking right out front, but it’s way, way easier now.

For those who need it, the Loading Zone directly outside our front doors was not impacted by this change at all and is exactly the same. 👍

Secondly, we updated and improved some of our signage. Our lightbox sign was always tricky to read after dark, so we updated that with a fresh vinyl that can be read anytime of day. Our 7ft Cobbler Lady is also now on the building, making the studio easier to find our front doors. We love to be a hidden gem, but are ready to be a findable gem too. 😛

We love an oversized jacket, but often times, shortening the sleeves is what really pulls it all together. 💅

Our client brought us this delightful, vintage-style Canucks jacket to be altered. The sleeves were measured and shortened, with the original elastic cuffs reinstalled afterwards. We did the same for the body, shortening to just below the pocket welts and re-attaching the elastic hem.

It’s not uncommon that the placement of the pocket welts is what dictates how much someone may want to shorten a jacket body! While we can remove and patch behind them, it’s usually cleaner to shorten to just below or just above (like we did on this one).

Swipe through to see the Before and Backside photo! (Unfourtunately, we didn’t have anyone with shorter arms around to model it 😅)

Happy World Leather Day, friends! 🥳

It’s strange to think about how our relationship to leather, on a personal level, has brought us so
much joy. We’ve met amazing people who have become lifelong friends, we’ve gotten to travel
with leather repair as the focus, and we have the pleasure of running a business in service of
leather (among other materials 😛)! That’s a pretty special partnership, with a material, in this day and age.

To celebrate with a bang, I present the flaming wallet we finished this month. 🔥 When a local
magician approached us to replace his trick wallet, we couldn’t say no. The layout and design
were replicated from his previous wallet, which had begun to break down with age (and fire,
maybe). Inside, there is a strike pad that (someone with much faster hands than us) will light,
with a little flick, while performing!

Image Description – (Video 1) Ariss squats in front of our green metal backdoors, holding the
wallet. They open the wallet and a fire starts a second after. They close the wallet and it goes
out, and then re-open the wallet to reveal the regular insides.

A repair doesn't have to be complicated for you to enjoy it! 💪

Sometimes, simple is just what makes the most sense. The rest of this handle was in good shape, matched the bag and had a unique lacing detail on the underside. While we could have re-made it from scratch, and it would’ve looked very cool also, the cost would’ve been dramatically different than the repair we went with. This repair honors the original strap, while still fitting within the one's budget!

At the base of each strap, we removed the old, torn attachment points and replaced them with new leather loops and brass rivets. While not all jobs have one available, we are always happy to suggest a “simpler” repair when possible! It’s an uphill battle in this day and age, but we try to keep repair accessible because we believe it should be. 🤝

(Pic 2) A closeup of the “after repair”. (Pic 3) The same bag sits in the same spot, but with its former handle laying in front of it. The handle has torn at both attachment ends.

This is who is fixing your leather jacket! A little Batman to save the day. 😍

Happy Birthday, Ariss! ✨ Since it’s on a Sunday, there’s a very strong chance that they are out on the softball diamond, tending to their garden patch and/or somewhere with birds and a pair of binoculars in hand. Their energy around the studio is unmistakable – confident, honest, and speedy. This small business very much requires two people at the helm, and I’m continually grateful to share the job with them.

If you’ve come into Awl Together Leather, you’ve very likely met or seen them around the studio. Please join me in wishing them the happiest of days! 🥳

Spring has sprung, and we know what that means! 🌸 It’s clog season.

Clogs are one of the most definitive examples of enduring fashion. The oldest surviving examples are from the 13th century, but since the soles were carved from wood, it’s impossible to know how long humans have been making them for. A clog maker was sometimes called a “Bodger”, which is just fun to say! 😛

These Troentorp Clogs’s original soles had begun to chip and crumble with age. We removed them entirely, replacing them with a new Vibram Stowe fullsole. The new soles are made of an EVA, which doesn’t degrade in the same way as the originals, but maintains a similar softness under the foot.

Save your vandalism for facists please! Small business owners, especially those owned by minorities, don't need this type of attention. Its never fun to read into actions like this, and we generally try not to.... but this is not how we wanted our week to start 🫠

If you want to support, today's a great day to leave us a Google review or drop by with your repairs or custom projects!

Despite some of our posts, not all jobs have to be a complete overhaul! If something small is preventing you from wearing it, it's worth altering. ✨

This super soft orange-y suede jacket had pocket bags that had loosened and stretched out with age. This can happen with leather garments (sometimes from being work lots and sometimes because the specific leather is really soft/pliable). We were able to remove and re-sew the bags a little tighter, allowing for that taut look!

For those fellow sewists reading this - you may notice there is no topstitch on them, meaning we had to turn the jacket inside-out IN the pocket. 🙀 It wasn't not tricky.

This bag just got 10x cooler 💅

The original straps on this blue Herschel backpack had begun to peel and fray with age and wear. This is an easy way to tell if something is real leather because real leather does NOT do this!

We removed and remade all of the strapping and loops with new 5-6oz "Coffee Bean" leather. This hide has a bit of pull-up, meaning when stretched or folded, the colour will lighten in that area. This creates a fun patina nearly instantly, that only gets better with age as the leather softens from use. The double-bar buckles and hardware are all original.

That feeling when your jacket sleeves are the perfect length for you? Delightful✨

Our client brought us this fantastic moto-style leather jacket, but the sleeves were uncomfortable short. Mimicking the quilted shoulder panels, we added quilted panels mid-arm at the elbow to extend the length. Our favourite black 2.5-3.5oz semi-aniline full-grain leather matches the existing grain and blends right in.

When it comes to lengthening sleeves, every jacket is a little different. Sometimes we can add length at the elbow (this jacket had an existing seam there, which helped), sometimes we add bomber-jacket style elastic cuffs, sometimes we add a new leather cuff, sometimes we can unfold an existing internal cuff, etc! At intake, we go over your particular jacket with you, explaining what options are possible.

Image Description: (Pic 1) Ariss is standing in front of our green metal doors, wearing a leather jacket and smiling. The sleeves have been lengthened. (Pic 2) Ariss is holding both arms foreward, to highlight the extension panels added at the elbows. (Pic 3) Ariss is standing in the same spot as Pic 1, but with their arms outward, before the sleeves had length added.

When a jacket is truly a piece of art, and a piece of art is a jacket. 😍

We had the pleasure of installing some fresh snaps on this vintage Joe Average leather jacket recently and it's been living in our minds rent-free since.

Joe Average was a beloved Canadian (Vancouverite!) artist. Known for his bright, colourful work depicting people and nature, he was at the forefront of HIV/AIDS activism and 2SLGBTQIA+ rights throughout his entire career. He lived with HIV/AIDS for nearly 40 years, creating visibility and raising awareness. His dedication to living publicly is an inspiration, but especially so in these challenging times.

Image Description: A leather jacket lays across our hardware setting table. On the back of the jacket is a bright, primary-coloured jacket patch made by Joe Average. It features a person's face, with bold black outlines.
