Against ALL forms of colonial oppression, including the pressure to fit within the gender binary and “traditional gender roles”.

Indigenous Peoples have living with Turtle Island since time immemorial and our communities revere diversity - not fear it.

Decolonial love, always.

Every act of decolonization - no matter how big or small - is a reclamation. The revolution that crumbles oppressive empires until it all falls.

Mothering is a verb. It is an active, fierce, never-ending job of protecting, providing, and nurturing the next generation to become who they are born to be.

In many Indigenous cultures, it is the children and by extension the mothers, who are the center of our community circles. Unlike the hierarchy of colonial power, in which mothers and children are an after-thought or even a nuisance, mothers and children are the primary focus of Indigenous communities. We live, work, play and breathe with children as our focus.

And so mothers, of all kinds, carry a special role.

Mothers are warriors, providers, wisdom-keepers, teachers and caregivers.

Mothers are the ones who birth life and also the ones who sustain it - even if they didn’t give birth themselves.

In our communities, it is common for aunties, kokums and friends to step in as mothers when needed. Because family exists far beyond the colonial definitions.

So today and always - we honour the mothers.

Tag a mom who is doing an incredible job. Hands raised to you 🙌🏾

She is our Mother 🌎 We are the Land. She doesn’t belong to us but we belong to her.

When we decolonize the colonial framework that makes us forget this, it puts everything back in place.

Because it doesn’t matter who you are or how much money you have, we will all return to the Land.

And so how we care for the Land is how we care for ourselves.

How we treat the Land is how we treat our Women.

We cannot disconnect from these things. Forgetting is the reason why we are in a climate crisis and why we have such horrific rates of violence towards women, girls and 2Spirit kin.

Because colonization made us forget. We forgot our mother. We treat the Land like a resource instead of a relationship. We lost our way.

This is your call to remember. 🌿
