New Year’s Eve looks different for us this year.

I’m writing this from the hospital while Roman is still in surgery for his alveolar bone graft revision - and I’m so thankful we got a spot for his surgery.

Huge thank you to BC Children’s Hospital and all the incredible staff who have cared for with such kindness.
And a special thank you to the cleft team,
especially Dr. Grabowski for going above and beyond for our family. 🤍

Tonight isn’t a countdown kind of night - it’s a “just be here” kind of night. Taking it moment by moment, feeling hopeful and at peace.

Walking into 2026 with gratitude, faith, and fresh hope.
Grateful for family, friends, and the cleft community. 🤍

The clip of Angelo Stiller being mocked for his cleft is everywhere right now.

The player who mocked him has apologised and been disciplined by his club, which I appreciate. But as a cleft mom, I don’t want that moment to be the whole story.

✨✨✨I want people to see this too: a player born with a cleft, playing in Germany’s top division, living his dream on the pitch. That’s strength. That’s resilience. That’s the headline.🤍

To every cleft kid: you are not defined by a screenshot of someone else’s ignorance.
To every cleft parent: your quiet, daily courage is building something the world can’t always see.

You belong on the field, on the pitch, on the stage. You belong in the photo. You belong in every room you walk into. 🤍

Children and adults born with cleft lip and palate deserve to see faces like theirs spoken about with dignity – not as a horror effect or something to react to. 💛

As a cleft mom and cleft lip & palate advocate, this kind of language lands differently. For many families, a different-looking lip or scars around the mouth aren’t makeup or transformation – they’re simply someone’s real, everyday face.

When “that lip” is highlighted as part of what makes an image disturbing or “deglammed,” it can quietly teach kids with facial differences that their own faces are something to be stared at or feared.

This isn’t about attacking the movie or the actors. It’s an awareness post from a cleft mom who loves a child with a different smile:
• Facial differences are not props.
• Every face deserves respectful language.
• Kids with clefts should grow up knowing their smiles are worthy, not “wrong” or “less than.”

To any cleft kid or parent who comes across headlines like this: your face is not the problem. Your smile belongs in every story. 💛
