NYXI is a brand new line with a mixture of hard edge, sexy and rebellion combined with the freeness and passion of a free spirited and wild girl with a badass attitude. The line takes inspiration from the young rebel kids who swarm the downtown sidewalks in groups and their crazy and loud personalities. The line was named NYXI as a play on the designer's name, Nikita Coles. It is something that ha
s been in the brainstorming stages for quite a few years and now that she has a degree in fashion design she feels like she is ready to make it a reality. The basic concept for NYXI was an urban ready to wear bridge line for a younger woman, in her mid to late-20s, who works to make a living and does quite well for herself, but also likes to get a little crazy on the weekend or after work. She is a woman who loves music and spends as much of her free time as possible at rock concerts and most of the summer weekends at music festivals. Her taste in clothing isn't too expensive but she will spend a lot more on that one stand out piece that will get her noticed. She loves to make a statement and stand out in a room whether it's through some kind of flashy design or something with a lot of detail or something that clearly had a lot of effort put into creating it. The designer wanted to create pieces that can be mixed into an existing wardrobe to make every outfit that much more exciting. Her goal was to introduce garments that were well made and long lasting that can be worn for years to come and can spice up an everyday outfit or bring a little naughtiness into a night out look. Nikita Coles, the designer, taught herself to sew and design since as young as 7 and carried on growing throughout high school sewing classes and eventually onto Blanche MacDonald, receiving a degree in fashion design. As a teen she was a wild party and rave goer who found it very difficult to find unique clothing in the small town she grew up in so she was inspired to create her own. This mostly started as customizing t-shirts with original designs and ripped off twists on logos and developed into recreating purchased clothing and drafting and sewing her own designs without really understanding what she was doing. After being introduced to the local music festival scene she bounced back and forth between a love of punk rock fashion and earthy hippie style, and continues to do so today. Some of her biggest influences include harder rock things such as the S*x Pistols, The Pretty Reckless and other punk rock music, leather wear, metal studs, rock concerts and slightly fe**sh styles of clothing. Although she loves all of the hard edge style she also is largely influenced by gentler things like flowy silk dresses, fringe, folk music festivals, soft furs, and draped flower child fashion. Her goal is to take all of her personal influences and tastes in design and fashion and create something beautiful, sexy, dangerous and mischievous. NYXI's first collection debuted May 24th at Blanche MacDonald Center, Robson Street, downtown Vancouver.
