In 2008, my husband and I lived out of a van in Australia for nine months. We travelled the eastern half of the country starting in Brisbane, heading north, across to Darwin, down through the centre to Adelaide, and then back up the east coast to Brisbane.
We didn’t carry much with us. Just the essentials. And one tiny Dijon mustard jar filled with red sand.
That little jar travelled thousands of kilometres, crossed deserts and coastlines, and eventually made its way home to sit quietly on a shelf. Over time it gathered dust, but it never lost its meaning. It became the beginning of HiEKKA.
HiEKKA means sand in Finnish. That tiny jar of red sand is where the name came from.
Every so often, I open my sand collection and create something special. I haven’t worked with this red sand in about a year and a half, but yesterday I did.
There is one pair available. Made from a journey.
And if you have sand that holds a story of your own, I would love to create something custom for you. Your memories, made wearable.
