Easy now, old friend, lay still, lay calm,
The battle's roar fades, the air turns warm.
Your breath is shallow, your eyes grow dim,
But I am here - I'm with you, Jim.
You carried me through fire and fear,
Through fields of mud, through skies unclear.
When bullets flew and the ground did quake,
You held your ground for my own sake.
I know it hurts, I see the pain,
But soon, old boy, you’ll be free again.
No more harness, no more fight,
Only peace in endless night.
Remember the days we raced through the sun,
When war was far and life was fun?
I see you now, in meadows wide,
Galloping free, no need to hide.
I wish I could mend your broken frame,
But war takes all - it’s cruel, it’s plain.
So rest, dear Jim, your work is done,
The battle's lost, but you have won.
Your courage stays, though you depart,
You gave your strength, you gave your heart.
And as you close your gentle eyes,
Know that a hero never dies.
Goodbye, old friend, you've earned your rest,
A soldier’s steed, you gave your best.
I'll carry your spirit, where'er I roam -
For now, go on... gallop home.
Edit: I’m deeply moved by the overwhelming engagement on my post honoring veterans and the horses that stood by their side in battle.
