Nearly 3 years ago I started designing a rattan furniture collection. JUST before our first Covid lockdown, I was about to sign a contract with a large-scale rattan manufacturer and was told they were increasing all their pricing, and shipping costs effective immediately.
I was devastated. My photography business was taking a toll as well, with all the restrictions in effect, prohibiting photographers from working.
I went back to the drawing board. After two years of sketching, planning, researching… and I completely started from scratch.
I connected with a woman from Turkey named Nurgüil. Nurgüil sources rugs from small villages in Anatolia, but mentioned she had been searching for a new way to support her family. This pandemic has affected all of us, in one way or another. It affected her family, she was no longer able to sell her rugs in the local market, as they were primarily sold to tourists visiting their town.
