Prisoners Justice Day hits different when you’ve lived it.

I know what it feels like to be written off because of your past.

That’s a big reason we do the work we do at Red Rebel Armour.

People coming home need more than words.

They need real opportunities, real support, and people willing to see who they can become.

A record should not be a life sentence.

Today we remember those inside, those who never made it home, and those still fighting to build a new path.

Throwback to one of our early videos explaining what we were trying to build with Red Rebel Armour.

The guy in this video was our very first hire.

We worked together for about 18 months.

During that time he finished his stat, got his kids back, and got his own place for the first time in his life.

Those are big wins.

Unfortunately, after moving out on his own and getting back around some of his old friends, he ended up back in the system. We still talk on the phone today.

I share this because sometimes people look at this work like success is either someone made it or they didn’t.

I don’t see it that way.

For 18 months, he worked. He was there for his kids. He had his own home. He was building something for himself.

That mattered.

And it showed us early on what can happen when someone has an opportunity, some stability, and people in their corner.

A job can change a lot.

But we also learned that a job alone can’t fix everything.

That lesson has stayed with me as we continue building Red Rebel Armour today.

We have to do it ourselves.

More jobs.

More businesses.

More chances for our people.

That’s how we take our power back.

People still call them “schools.”

But the receipts say Indigenous children were taken from their families and communities for over 150 years.

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation says more than 150,000 children attended residential schools. Many never returned.

Canada’s own records also say about 150,000 Indigenous children were removed and separated from their families and communities.

That was not just education.
That was separation.

This is the history Canada should have taught us.
