We dug back into history for this one – patterning ours from one of the 80s originals – sparing no expense to re-create stitch-for-stitch, the quality, feel, and vibe of the iconic Bimini sweatshirt.

Back to Bimini, 1979

Six months into operations, before I was born, my parents (Uldis and Marilee) had yet to find their footing. Bimini was a young upstart casual clothing retailer at 2064 Queen Street East, and they were teetering on the brink.

But then came a lucky break that likely changed the course of history - the paint store next door caught fire. Thankfully no one was hurt, but Bimini’s stock was completely engulfed in smoke. Insurance kept the business temporarily afloat, and too, my young entrepreneurial parents held a deep-discount "Smoke Sale", drawing local neighborhood crowds for the very first time.

The Beaches community showed up in droves! It was the first time many locals stepped foot into the shop - getting the opportunity to meet the young founders (with baby on the way), and experiencing their cooly curated collection of wears and unique eye for fashion. The success of that sale truly launched Bimini In The Beaches into the hearts of the community, and the rest… is history.

Bimini is Back!

Made from 100% cotton fleece, this crewneck is locally cut, sewn, and garment dyed just like the originals.

Our classic “Bimini In the Beaches” logo is embroidered in a dusty pink colour, a nod to the iconic neon sign that graced the store at 2064 Queen Street East from 1978 to 1988.

What once was old is new again.

Back to Bimini, 1983

Bimini was known for their creative marketing initiatives - from "catchy" ear-worm radio jingles to their annual Balmy Beach fashion shows. But it was their sometimes controversial window storefront displays that were often the talk of the neighbourhood.

Throughout the 80s, Beaches' artist .wyers was given creative licence to design and build head turning worlds for his "Nobodies" - the gang of faceless mannequins featured in his seasonal displays.

There was an art to brick and mortar retail back in the day, and no one exemplified that better than Bimini In The Beaches.

From the start, The Bimini Sweatshirt had a life of its own. A family friend suggested my father make a logo’d crewneck—so he did.

It began as a simple cotton blank with a puff-printed logo, but the mid-80s colours, fit, and vibe hit perfectly. Beachers proudly repped their local gem, and as the design evolved—eventually crafted by Ontario’s own Non-Fiction by Tiger Brand—the sweatshirt became a staple of the business.

So in relaunching Bimini In The Beaches, it only made sense to start here. With the sweatshirt.
