Story of a Trail part 1....
Often the first descent of the day, it's lofty position over the Derwent Valley offers possibly the longest uninterrupted descent in South Derbyshire. Not to mention bloody lovely views all the way to the smoke stacks, way off in Leicestershire.
We rode this as nippers 25+ years ago and every MTBer growing up in Matlock will know the trail. Even recently featured in MBR magazine and labelled as a hidden jewel.
This has been a classic trail forever, enjoyed way back to when the weapon of choice around these parts was a silver rigid Marin from Fern's or a Zaskar from JEJames.
Back then the choice was a full on blast down to the woods at the bottom, or hop over the wall (no linking trail then) and down the bracken filled steeps of the 'landrover tracks'. The latter was most often the choice and the grassy slippy fields of fun used to have a few launchers made by the lads from Lea, with some sketchy lines through the ferns.
A few minutes later with some twists and turns, you are down by the factory, eyes watering and full of ideas. Where to next? Over to the Chase and the Gate - or up the climb to Blackrocks and up to the Trig? The first descent of the day complete.
Bloody loads has changed with MTB and the Trail Scene in the past 25 years, but much has remained the same & Hearthstone, Riber Run (or recently known as the DiamondBack Sorrento Loop) still keeps its thrill and charm! With classics like this and the advent of new trail builds, the Derbyshire MTB scene is absolutely thriving!
The End.
