China rich list compiler Hurun clarifies Tsinghua graduate Zhang Zetian’s ranking to quell online controversy
According to Hurun, Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University have produced the most graduates to become billionaires in China
Zhang ranked behind Meituan founder Wang Xing and Xu Hang, founder of property developer Parkland Group.

The Hurun Research Institute, a rich list compiler run by Rupert Hoogewerf, has clarified its decision to list Zhang Zetian, wife of Chinese tech billionaire Richard Liu Qiangdong, as the third-richest person to have graduated from the prestigious Tsinghua University after the ranking stirred controversy online. According to a list published by Hurun last Friday, Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University have produced the most graduates to become billionaires in China. And 30-year-old Zhang was ranked as the third-richest graduate from Tsinghua, with a net worth of 60 billion yuan (US$8.4 billion). Zhang ranked behind 44-year-old Wang Xing, 44, founder of food delivery giant Meituan and 62-year-old Xu Hang, founder of property developer Parkland Group. However, many Chinese netizens questioned on social media platforms whether Zhang actually owns such massive wealth. Hurun issued a statement on Monday to clarify its methodology for the ranking of rich Chinese alumni. “In the case of Tsinghua’s Zhang, her 60 billion yuan worth falls under her and [husband] Liu jointly.”

The controversy comes amid greater scrutiny of personal wealth and income inequality in China. According to a separate rich list published by Forbes in November 2023, the net worth of Liu, founder and chairman of e-commerce giant JD.com, was US$4.7 billion, ranking No. 69 in China’s top 100 rich list. Liu’s celebrity-style marriage to Zhang is also rare among Chinese tech billionaires, with many maintaining a low profile when it comes to family matters.

China’s youngest female billionaire Zhang Zetian proves sense of style
Zhang Zetian, recognized as China’s youngest female billionaire by various media outlets, consistently garners praise for her fashion sense at public appearances.
Zhang made a stylish appearance at an event in Italy on Saturday by fashion house Tod’s, wearing a selection from the brand’s Fall/Winter 2024

Sina reports that Zhang stands as a key influencer within China’s fashion industry, managing the fashion segment of a prominent e-commerce entity.

Her fashion choices frequently lean towards monochromatic and tastefully colored ensembles.

For her makeup, she seldom opts for bold red lipstick.

Zhang gained nationwide attention in China in 2009 when an image of her in a schoolgirl outfit, holding a cup of milk tea, became an internet sensation. She has since been dubbed the “milk tea sister” and has featured in numerous television shows and fashion publications.

Her prominence rose further when renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou invited her to star in “The Flowers of War.” Choosing to prioritize her education, she turned down the role.

Additionally, Zhang’s academic accomplishments are impressive. She gained direct admission to the prestigious Tsinghua University in 2011.

The economic and financial research firm Hurun included her in its “Most Successful Alumni” list, which showcases the most accomplished graduates from China’s elite universities, this year. Zhang stood out as Tsinghua University’s wealthiest alumnus, boasting a net worth of 60 billion yuan (US$8.4 billion).

Remarkably, this was the third year in a row that Zhang led the list.

In 2015, she wed Liu Qiangdong, the 51-year-old chairman of JD.com, a leading Chinese e-commerce firm. Forbes valued Liu’s fortune at US$4.9 billion in 2023. Zhang has reportedly played key roles at JD.com since their union.

The couple welcomed their first daughter in 2015. Liu revealed in 2023 that Zhang was expecting again. There have been reports of Zhang giving birth to twin boys last year, although the couple has yet to confirm these

Zhang Zetian becomes China's youngest female billionaire at 31 with $8.4B fortune

Zhang Zetian, often labeled as China's youngest female billionaire by media sources, reportedly possesses a fortune of 60 billion yuan (US$8.4 billion) at 31 years old.

Economic and financial research firm Hurun issued its "Most Successful Alumni" list, which features the most successful graduates from China's prestigious universities, for the third year in a row last week. Zhang topped the list as the wealthiest alumna from Tsinghua University, with a net worth of 60 billion yuan.

Zhang's outstanding academic achievements during her school years are also noteworthy. She was directly admitted to the esteemed Tsinghua University in 2011.

Subsequently gaining fame for her appearance, she was asked by famous director Zhang Yimou to act in the movie "The Flowers of War." However, she declined the offer to focus on her studies.

In 2015, Zhang married Liu Qiangdong, the 51-year-old chairman of JD.com, a major Chinese e-commerce platform. As of 2023, Forbes lists Liu's net worth at US$4.9 billion. Since their marriage, Zhang has reportedly held significant roles at JD.com.

In 2018, Liu was detained in Minnesota under suspicion of r**e, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. His lawyer refuted the allegations, stating there was no evidence to back the charge.

A Chinese-American student at the University of Minnesota subsequently sued Liu, accusing him of sexual assault. The two reached a settlement in 2022. Liu expressed his gratitude towards Zhang for her support and tolerance during the lawsuit, remarking: "Without her, I couldn't have made it to this day. I will cherish, care for, and protect my family."

Zhang is also recognized as a prominent figure in China's fashion industry. Her regular appearances at international fashion weeks and the Cannes Film Festival have been highlighted by Sina.
