With their 26-centimetre-tall platform soles, these Turkish bath clogs, nalın, were designed to lift the wearer above the wet floor of the baths.

They’re also known as ‘qabqab’ in Arabic, from the clacking noise they made on marble floors.

Raised, decorated wooden clogs were worn only by women, and their decoration and impractical height were markers of elevated social standing. Although they were worn in part to avoid slipping on wet floors, the wearer did require a personal attendant for support!
