Hello everybody. I had some pretty powerful experiences today with the Playa Matapalo volunteer lifeguards. As I was walking from A Kachete (the beachfront store) to the beach, I witnessed the end of a 3 person rescue by our volunteer lifeguard named Jairo. This man performed a heroic action for a very challenging situation with 3 panicked and fatigued victims of the rip tide. Jairo handled the rescue like a true professional with precision. I could not imagine the outcome if Jairo was not on Playa Matapalo performing his duties as a lifeguard.

I also have the distinct pleasure of providing our first round of donated items from our Go Fund Me drive which is still active for the entire month of February. We were able to receive over $700 USD in donations to provide uniforms and equipment for this volunteer program. We were able to provide Polarized sunglasses which is one of the most important pieces of equipment they use. Whiskey Sunrise also provided each volunteer lifeguard with a uniform, f***y pack, whistle, keychain and cpr mask along with the sunglasses. We were able to provide medical equipment such as a large ambulatory first aid kit with additional items such as wraps and splints . We also provided a megaphone, gurney, inflatable lifeguard buoys among other equipment.

We still need donations to get this rolling along further. I’m creating a Playa Matapalo Volunteer Lifeguard Association. There will be a cost associated to legitimize this organization. Now that we have started with the basic safety/first aid equipment, we’re hoping to raise additional funds for equipment in order to expand their lifeguard coverage with roving patrols.

In addition to some additional equipment, we are in the process of hiring a first aid/lifeguard instructor to our beach of Playa Matapalo. This is very important for us to have the onsite training because of Playa Matapalo’s ocean conditions. We will be reaching out to other local lifeguard programs to fill slots. I am very committed to getting these men the appropriate credentials for the duties they carry out on their watch.

Hello everyone and thank you all for your support. Please donate as much as you can. No donation is too small and all of it is going towards the purchase of equipment. We are wrapping up this fundraiser and are trying to raise just a little more so we can get the medical equipment ordered for our upcoming trip in a few weeks. Our goal is to purchase an EMT bag and a packable gurney/stretcher for our lifeguards.

Yinier and crew have performed over 5 rescues already this season. Those lives are saved thanks to the donations and patronage to our volunteer lifeguards and subsidizing income with donations to their efforts.

If you know me, then you know how much I do to support my friends and community in the United States. It important to me that you all help me improve lifesaving services in my Costa Rican community of Playa Matapalo, Costa Rica.
