In August 1995, as Operation Storm (Oluja) swept across Krajina, hundreds of thousands of Serb civilians fled their homes in the largest act of ethnic cleansing of Serbs of the Yugoslav wars. Families who had lived on that land for generations packed what little they could onto tractors and cars, leaving behind homes, churches, photographs, and the lives they had built. Long columns of refugees stretched across the roads as artillery fire echoed in the distance. Some fleeing civilian convoys came under shelling and other attacks, resulting in many deaths among people attempting to escape. Elderly people, frightened children, and exhausted families continued onward, carrying only what they could as villages were left abandoned or destroyed behind them. For many, the loss was not only of property, but of community, heritage, and the hope of returning. Decades later, the events of August 1995 remain aa a haunting reminder of an ethnic cleansing that went without punishment, and the enduring grief felt by those who lost loved ones and were forced to leave everything behind.
