I am thrilled to share my latest interview with Politis newspaper, published on April 6th. We discussed the evolving landscape of interior architecture and the essential role of inspirational design in our lives.

CAVO MARIS POOL RENOVATIONS

See below "Before" and "After" pictures of the space!

A “Cool” transformation for hot summer days!

When the customers approached my office for a “soft renovation” of their pool area back in 2022, we came across several functional issues. The main problem of the pool was that the right half of the pool had a 3 meter depth. That made it very difficult for pool users to enjoy. Water games, water aerobics, general swimming and seating in the pool, all took place on the left-hand side of the pool where the swim up bar was. The result…an overcrowded swimming pool on the left side and an empty pool on the right.
In addition to that, Cavo Maris being a family hotel had no designated infant pool. The “Kids Pool” was not suitable for infants and there was no shade to protect the infants from the strong sun.
All the above issues, along with a great need for an actual Pool Bar, not just a Swim-up Bar, brought me to the discussion table with the owners. A “Soft Renovation” would not resolve any of the problems - the space was in dire need of a major renovation! New design goals were set, a Pool Bar, an Infant Pool and a new swimming pool of normal depth that could be used all around.
My team and I were thrilled with the prospect of designing this project.
Our goal was to decongest the left side of the pool and bring the users to the right. We designed a new pool with the same depth left and right and created a whirlpool bath on the right-hand side to attract customers. We also added a counter area with stools and two copra water features to the area. The result…the customers now make use of all the swimming pool!
The previous Swim Up Bar faced northwest, as a result the bar tenders were constantly in the sun. So, we changed the direction of the bar and created a waterfall feature in front of the bar to provide some shade to the bar tenders and customers alike. The inspiration for the Swim up bar pattern came without thought. The beach in front of the hotel with its natural groves and rocks is a heaven for turtles. The pattern of the turtles’ shell became our Design Inspiration!
The Hotel had an existing Gelateria but needed an actual Pool Bar, as all drinks were being serviced from the Swim Up Bar. After a lot of debate and discussion it was decided to totally redesign the Gelateria and incorporate a bar. So, we created the Medusa Pool Bar Gelateria. Inspired by Medusa we added the logo to our design and even incorporated the story of Medusa in our design. One of the main features I was thrilled to see come to life, was the play of light and shadows on the ceiling created by a spotlight specifically directed through the logo cut out!
An interactive pool was created in place of the previous Kids Pool, that is partially shallow and can be used for playing and swimming. A special arched water feature made of 4 rings, was ordered, to facilitate water play by wheelchair users. Two mushroom water features and several interactive water bubblers encourage play and creativity.
In the place of the typical dry playground with swings and slides we created a small curved pool for the infants and their parents. A custom designed mosaic decorates the pool and two water features cascade creating movement and interest to the curved wall. Shading above partially covers the pool providing protection to the infant users of the pool and their parents.
This was undoubtedly a very exciting project, and we are thrilled to see the outcome. As a designer there is no greater pleasure than taking dysfunctional spaces and turning them to fully functional useful areas, incorporating a stunning design!

Beach House Design!!!

What a fun and great project this was! A breath of fresh air or rather..... a "Sea Breeze" as the house carries a beach style theme throughout!!
As a designer, I am constantly asked "How do you create such unique spaces? All so very different from one another?" Well...the answer to this is very simple.... a lot of hard work and....a thorough understanding of our clients. This is especially important when designing Residential projects (houses) like this one.
Understanding who your clients are, their needs, and their personal style, is the key to designing a home that will feel to them as their own and an extension of who they are.
In this case, my clients Mandy and Gabor, a lovely couple from Germany, desperate for sunshine and warmth, decided to build a house on our beautiful island of Cyprus!
They loved the Beach House Theme, so together, we set about creating their new home. It is unusual for customers to request this particular style for their house, so for us this project was a wonderful adventure. Add to this formula such great customers and the result is stunning!
A beach house that exudes a bright and airy feel that is soft and very very relaxed. The light tones in the paintwork and light finishes, internally help to set the tone of the entire home. The cool whites we used, work well with the tones of blues and greens, alongside the earthy tones of greys and light browns. But the key to this great Beach home design, as we mentioned above, were the customers themselves! They provided us with the inspiration! The vibrant blue colour of Mandy’s eyes and her energy are speckled everywhere in the house. From the pillows to the paintings, to the beautiful grey/blue of the sofas! Gabor’s sturdy and stable personality characteristics are reflected in all the rich tones of the wood, found throughout the house!
All these elements we incorporated in our design, enable the customers to feel that this home we created reflects their personal style, and is indeed an extension of who they are!
Special thanks to Marnico for the beautiful furniture that fit right into our theme! Karekin Interiors for the accessories, the upholstery fabrics, side boards, custom made coffee tables and... the so very comfortable chaise lounge! Charilaos Stavrakis for the beautiful bedroom coral fabrics and curtains. The developer of the project Dimitris Michael who oversaw and materialized all our unusual requests, and of course our clients Mandy and Gabor for this opportunity to design their house and turn it into a Home!

CAVO MARIS - ROOM RENOVATIONS

Located at one of the most beautiful locations on the island, Cavo Maris Beach Hotel is widely known for its excellent quality of food and stunning views!
However, the rooms were outdated and in great need of a major make over.
My office Sofia Suri Design Office, was assigned this monumental renovation! A project estimated at 10.5 million euros with around 247 rooms of various types.
Hotel renovations, have a very narrow window of 5-6 months to complete their works. So...we got to work!
A correct design process, after the budget is assigned starts with a Design Concept...an idea. This is carried on paper starting from a floor plan, followed by 2D drawings and construction drawings, and then generated into Photorealistic 3D images. At this stage, costs are estimated and adjustments are made accordingly. Then one room is constructed as a sample room.
For the Cavo Maris Room Renovations, this entire process took place a year before the actual renovation. It was extremely important as it helped all parties involved. In this case, exact budgets were estimated, time frames were set, materials were ordered, offers evaluated and ample time was given to contractors to construct whatever can be constructed ahead of time.
For this project, we worked closely with Stereotis Company for the selection of the stunning wood panels and EKMA Furnishings who materialized our designs with their excellent craftsmanship!
Thanks to the planning, and outstanding effort of the Project Manager, Mr. Solon Mettis, and the collaboration of all consultants, contractors and the owners of the hotel, the project finished on time, opening its doors and welcoming guests at the beginning of the tourist season as planned!

ΑΙΘΟΥΣΑ ΔΕΞΙΩΣΕΩΝ ΖΟΡΠΑΣ ΑΥΓΟΡΟΥ-ΑΝΑΚΑΙΝΙΣΗ!

Zorpas Reception Hall! Transformations!

Zorbas Reception Hall is a family owned business passing from generation to generation.
This particular establishment is located in Avgorou. A village in the Famagusta area with its own unique traditions and culture.
On this part of the island, when a couple gets married, the entire village and all relatives and friends, are invited to the wedding! Because of that, these Halls are unusually big, as they need to accommodate at least 1500-2000 guests. And....if possible, with all guests having direct and visual access to the dance floor!

The challenges with this project were many.
Limited time for the renovation, creating a neutral background that would not interfere with the wedding party decorations, applying a design that would be appealing to the people of the area, and many more.
However, the biggest challenge for us, was the vast open space...How do you create a space that looks appealing when it is so large?
As there are no middle walls in the space, we decided to turn our main focus of design, to the ceilings. We raised the ceiling up, created different levels within the ceilings, and used lighting to create further interest and depth.
But... what really made the difference and created an amazing effect, were the string curtains we used on the ceiling in a curved formation. These do not only look stunning but they literally "come to life" and start moving when the doors open, or the air vents work!

I would like to thank all crews and teams who worked restlessly to finish this project on time, and I especially want to thank Karekin Interiors for providing, installing and materializing my string curtain vision!

ROBINSON RESORT
Fitness Gym Renovation

What a challenging project this was!
We have been working with Robinson Resort for many years now. The biggest project we have designed for them was the 11.5 million euro Room Renovation we did for them in 2021. It was at then that the resort changed from Aldiana, as it was named at the time, to Robinson!
This particular project was challenging not because of its difficulty in Design, but for the amount of time we had to Design and execute the project.
Total assigned time 2 months! A feat inconceivable by normal timeframes!

Three factors contributed to achieving this great result, as pictured in the photographs, within the allocated time.
1. The fantastic team of Robinson Cyprus who took a lot of the load of work themselves to construct, under the supervision of Mr. Nikos Nicolaou, Chief Engineer,
2. The fact that we have worked with both the main contractor of the project Mr. Christos Kotas, and the carpentry company Yiangou Brothers in the past, in various other projects, and of course,
3. Our 30 years of experience in Design making it possible for us to cut some shortcuts and find alternative ways to speed up the design process!

CYHERBIA BOTANICAL PARK-Tea Room/Bistro Renovation

Cyherbia is a beautiful botanical park in the Famagusta region. Entering this magical place one can only feel amazed by the vision and creation of this park. A place where butterflies fly in your hands and bees buzz harmlessly around you!
As you enter the gardens, your senses awake to the sight of all shades of green and as you breathe in the intense aromas of the herbs, your body becomes alive and energized. Lavender fields blooming, buzzing with bees, a great labyrinth and a trail amongst tall Cypress trees are just a few of the treasures this place holds.
Miranda and Adamos are the people behind this creation. Their vision, hard work and persistence made all this possible resulting in this green paradise.
However, the Tea room at the park, needed a major renovation. So, we set to work. Our goal was to create a multipurpose space for them to use and enjoy all year round.
A fireplace became our focal point as Miranda emphasized the need to create an area to display her beautiful wreaths and candles. Comfortable wooden benches along the fireplace wall provide alternative seating for the tearoom. Wood, stone, and all natural materials were selected for the design of the space.
As the park did not have a ticketing booth/area, a small cottage was designed to accommodate this along with the lavender shop.
You can see some before and after pictures of the areas.
I wish I could also bring to you the amazing smells of the place but since I can’t, you must go visit and experience them yourselves!

It was a great honor to work with such amazing and inspiring people and I am grateful to have added my little spell to this magical place!

ΒΟΤΑΝΟΚΗΠΟΣ CYHERBIA-Ανακαίνιση Τειοποείου.

To Cyheria είναι ένα βοτανικό πάρκο στην Αμμόχωστο. Καθώς εισέρχεσαι στο χώρο δεν μπορείς παρά να θαυμάσεις αυτή την υπέροχη δημιουργία. Ένα μέρος όπου οι πεταλούδες πετούν στα χέρια σου και οι μέλισσες ζουζουνίζουν δίπλα σου.
Οι αισθήσεις ξυπνούν στην θέα των αποχρώσεων του πράσινου και καθώς εισπνέεις τις απίστευτές μυρωδιές των βοτάνων το σώμα ζωντανεύει και ενεργοποιείται. Ανθισμένες λεβάντες, ένας μεγάλος λαβύρινθος και ένα μονοπάτι κυπαρισσιών, είναι μερικοί από τους θησαυρούς του πάρκου.
Η Μιράντα και ο Αδάμος είναι τα άτομα πίσω από αυτή την δημιουργία. Το όραμά τους, η σκληρή δουλειά και η επιμονή τους είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα αυτόν τον πράσινο παράδεισο.
Παρόλα αυτά, το υφιστάμενο Τεϊοποτείο(Tea Room) στον χώρο, δεν σύναδε καθόλου με την θεματολογία του πάρκου. Στόχος του γραφείου μας να δημιουργήσουμε ένα πολυχώρο που να μπορεί χρησιμοποιείται ολόχρονα.
Κεντρικά σχεδιάσαμε ένα τζάκι, καθώς η Μιράντα μας τόνισε την ανάγκη ενός χώρου για να τοποθετεί τα υπέροχα στεφάνια που φτιάχνει. Ξύλο, πέτρα και άλλα φυσικά υλικά επιλέχθηκαν για το χώρο αυτό.
Εκτός από το Τεϊοποτείο/Bistro, σχεδιάσαμε και ένα μικρό σπιτάκι για την πώληση εισιτηρίων στο πάρκο μαζί με το κατάστημα προϊόντων Λεβάντας.

Εύχομαι να μπορούσα να φέρω σε εσάς τις απίστευτες μυρωδιές του χώρου μέσα από τις φωτογραφίες αλλά αφού αυτό δεν είναι δυνατόν, επισκεφθείτε οι ίδιοι το χώρο και αναδυθείτε στα αρώματα των βοτάνων!
Ήταν μεγάλη τιμή να δουλέψουμε με αυτούς τους δύο υπέροχους ανθρώπους και χαίρομαι που μπορέσαμε να προσθέσουμε λίγο και από την δική μας μαγεία σε αυτό το μαγευτικό μέρος!
