Our authentic reproductions of historical textiles are inspired by surviving originals, period artworks, and remarkable collections from around the world. Each design is the result of careful research, respect for historical sources, and traditional craftsmanship. 🏰

Some of these fabrics are even woven using centuries-old techniques that have remained virtually unchanged through time.

Which historical period fascinates you the most – the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque, or the Rococo era?

These gowns, created by and inspired by a portrait of Maria Christina of Austria, demonstrate just how powerful a thoughtfully chosen fabric can be. The deep red taffeta takes centre stage here – its richness, sheen, and ever-changing appearance in the light give the garment a truly distinctive character.

It is in the purity of form and the beauty of the fabric itself that timeless elegance resides. ⏳

What catches your eye first when looking at historical garments – the cut, the details, or the fabric itself?

Some projects begin with a dream design. Others begin with a question: “Why is this fabric so special?” 🤔

That’s exactly how describes her experience with her very first pure reenactment garment, made using our silk dupion and linen. As she admits, the journey involved plenty of mistakes and pattern adjustments, but working with authentic materials showed her why they are so beloved by makers around the world.

❤️ Striking red silk dupion, lined with natural linen and complemented by a delicate silk veil, creates a combination full of character, elegance, and historical authenticity.

We are absolutely thrilled that chose our Eleonora golden brocade for her new Henry VIII-era gown. 👑

Constructing a Tudor bodice is a demanding challenge, but the result is truly regal thanks to precise hand-sewing and premium material. In this design, our fabric has gained incredible depth, and the gold threads shine exactly as this era deserves. 💎

The pattern is a faithful, hand-woven replica of a Renaissance textile made famous by Eleanor of Toledo in Bronzino's renowned portraits. The artichoke motif and black arabesques on a light gray background were symbols of the power and taste of the Medici family. 🏛️

This brocade is created exclusively for Sartor. Weavers produce only about half a meter per day. Thanks to our direct partnership with weaving families, all earnings go straight to them, without middlemen. Small weaving irregularities are proof of authentic human craftsmanship, not a machine.

✨ This brocade has loose floats on the back; therefore, we recommend using a natural fiber lining (silk or fine linen). For perfect reinforcement of historical garments, reach for silk organza or crepeline. ✨

What about you? 🧵 What is the biggest challenge in historical costuming for you? Is it the bodice construction, endless hand-finishing, or making period accessories?

Choosing the right colors for a new project is sometimes the hardest (but also the most beautiful) part of sewing. ❤️

We’re constantly inspired by the diversity of our brocades. They are firm, densely woven, and hold their shape perfectly, yet remain soft and smooth to the touch. Whether you're planning a historical replica, a bold cosplay, or luxurious home accessories, brocade is always a safe bet.

Do you prefer subtle tone-on-tone ornaments, or are you drawn to these bold combinations in gemstone shades? Let us know your favorite color in the comments! 💬
