I am using the bark of the günlük ağacı here - Oriental sweetgum or Liquidambar orientalis grows only in the Muğla province. It creates a sweet, balsamic fragrance.

So many good memories from that week.. and our golden disco ball is still turning its magic in our entrance.

“We already can’t imagine our home without the rug.”

This was one of the first things Markus wrote to me after the kilim had settled into its beautiful new home.

I smiled, because this is exactly what I hope for every piece that leaves Wild Heart Free Soul.

A kilim isn’t just there to decorate a room. It becomes the place where a family gathers. Where children play, friends come together, coffee is shared, books are read, and quiet evenings unfold.

Vintage Anatolian kilims have already lived many lives. They have witnessed generations before us, and now they become part of a new story.

Thank you, Markus and family, for giving this beautiful piece a new chapter. 🤍

AFYON AVŞAR Vintage Kilim

There are kilims you admire.
And there are kilims that ask you to slow down.
This extraordinary Avşar weaving belongs to the latter.

The border immediately caught my attention. I have never encountered Elibelinde motifs interpreted quite like these before. Their bodies dissolve into flowing lines until they resemble vines, flames or branches. They feel almost architectural, yet organic at the same time, reminding me of Gothic ornamentation and the graceful curves of Jugendstil. Rather than individual women, they become one continuous current of feminine life surrounding the entire composition.

At the centre, abstract Elibelinde figures reveal another surprise.
Within each figure rests a pair of double-headed eagles.

To me, this transforms the familiar Elibelinde into something even more profound. The feminine is no longer only the giver of life. She becomes the keeper of vision. Rooted in the earth, yet able to see in every direction. Intuitive, protective and deeply aware.

The dialogue between the flowing border and the powerful central emblems makes this kilim feel almost timeless—as if ancient Anatolian symbolism briefly touched the visual language of medieval Europe without ever losing its own identity.

To me, it is a reminder that true feminine power is both gentle and fierce. It creates, protects, transforms and sees beyond the horizon.

BARAK Vintage Kilim

I love Barak kilims for their bold geometry and joyful colours. They always feel like sunlight woven into wool.
This one is filled with three symbols that speak deeply to me.

Göz reminds us to see with clarity. To trust our intuition and look beyond what is immediately visible.

Küpe is a reminder that true beauty begins within. The more we recognise our own worth, the less we seek validation from the outside world.

Bukağı has never felt like a shackle to me. I see it as the invisible thread that connects us to the people, places and values we consciously choose to devote our hearts to.

Perhaps freedom isn’t about having no ties at all, but about choosing the ones that help us grow. ✨

Sunset on our kilim field in Antalya. This video is from my archives, filmed in June of 2020.

Sadly, the kilim field looks very different today. Where there was once an abundance of vintage kilims and rugs gathered by traders from all over Anatolia, only a fraction remains.

These textiles are a finite resource. Kilims are no longer woven in people’s homes as they once were; a centuries-old tradition has almost disappeared. The youngest vintage kilims in my collection date to the 1970s. Very little came after that.

Over the years, the most beautiful pieces have found new homes across Europe, the US, Japan, and beyond. So if you own a vintage kilim, take good care of it. Have it cleaned, restored when needed, and treasure it. You may never find another quite like it.

When I watch this video, I remember almost every single kilim and the person who bought it. Some still make my heart ache a little, because I loved them dearly and know I’ll never be able to replace them.

But that’s the circle of life, Simba… and the life of a rug dealer.

I’m grateful I captured this moment. It’s a little piece of history now.
