There are many interesting facts about my species! Here are 3 of them:

1. Climbing skills: We are one of the largest native mammals in Latin America. We are highly agile climbers despite our weight and height and we build platforms and nests in trees, made of broken branches, for eating and sleeping.

2. Forest gardener and protector: We must travel across large areas to survive. Being great walkers, we disperse seeds from the fruit that we eat to other parts of the forest, allowing the natural regeneration of these ecosystems.

3. A unique species: We are the only native bear species in South America!

Do you know any other interesting fact about us?

Did you know that more than half of the world's paramos (moorlands) are located in Colombia? These are distributed mainly along the Andean mountain range . Six of the most representative paramos of this country are:

1. Sumapaz
2. Santurban
3. Chingaza
4. Oceta
5. Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

Have you ever heard of the Pacific Ring of Fire? 🔥 It's a long chain of tectonic plates about 40,000 kilometers long that borders the Pacific Ocean 🌊 and is characterized by high levels of seismic and volcanic activity!

In South America, this chain forms the famous "Andes Volcanic Belt," which runs almost the entire length of Chile and through parts of Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Colombia. This belt is not continuous. It's segmented into four large continental volcanic arcs separated by areas with no recent volcanic activity.

Did you know that the Andes has 4 of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world?

3. Cotopaxi -Ecuador: This 5,897-meter high volcano is located about 60 km south of Quito. Since the 16th century, it has erupted more than 50 times. Its last great eruption was in 1887 and it reactivated again in 2015. Authorities have now declared a yellow alert in areas near the volcano amid increasing seismic activity.

4. Misti - Peru: This 5,822-meter high volcano is the most famous volcano in the country and is located only 17km from Arequipa. This makes it possible to admire it from almost every part of the city. According to records, its last major eruption occurred in 1495, during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec. However, it is an active volcano with a long eruptive life ahead of it.

Did you know that the Andes has 4 of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world?

1. Nevado del Ruiz - Colombia: This 5.321-meter high volcano is one of the 6 glaciers that still exist in this country. A special characteristic of its eruptions is the generation of lahars: dangerous mudflow composed by a hot or cold mixture of water and rock fragments that move rapidly and can be devastating.

2. Villarrica - Chile: This 2,840-meter high volcano is one of the volcanoes with the most eruption records in South America and it is considered one of the most dangerous in Chile. The last recorded eruption occurred in March 2015.

Did you know that my species is currently at risk of extinction? We are the only native bear species in South America. However, this has not been reason enough to be able to live peacefully in our habitat.

Our territory is threatened primarily by habitat loss caused by deforestation, farming, cattle ranching, mining, illicit crops, hunting, urbanization and road constructions.

Therefore, I invite you to support initiatives that seek to protect us, so that our footprints do not cease to exist!🐾

Andean civilizations achieved an incredible adaptation level to their natural environment. They developed different agricultural techniques and tools, a few of which are still used today.

Three of them are:

1) Chakitaklla (foot plow): A human-powered plough tool on which the farmer can put his foot to sink it into the earth to produce a furrow.

2) Terrace farming: Farming method of growing crops that takes advantage of the mountain slopes to build platforms at different levels.

3) Irrigation farming: Irrigation system where artificial channels are used to carry water to the fields.
