Interpretations of Cat Chow’s work vacillate between wearable art and sculpture, depending on where it is exhibited. Drawing on her experience making fashion, jewelry, and chainmail, Chow experiments with unexpected materials and everyday objects, yet her garment forms keep her focus on the female body. “Measure for Measure” mimics a 1950s housewife’s dress, and the use of woven measuring tapes used for sewing explores ideas of women’s beauty standards, especially around body size. She states, “As people examine my work closely, they are asked to challenge their presumptions about the usage of common items and how it relates to issues of social context and sexual identity.”

“Art X Fashion” is on view through April 19, 2026. Curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way, Curator of Costume and Accessories, and featuring 140 garments, textiles, and accessories from The Museum at FIT’s permanent collection, this exhibition traces fashion and art's parallel aesthetics from 18th-century rococo to late-20th-century postmodernism.
