Old stone streets on a rainy day in Budva. Enjoyed the missing crowd. Budva’s Old Town is over 2,500 years old and is considered one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast.

On our way to Nikšić we passed through Podgorica and made a short detour to visit the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. The pretty new Serbian Orthodox cathedral was finished in 2013 after almost 20 years of construction. The golden mosaics, marble details and chandeliers are very impressive inside. We arrived during wedding ceremonies and saw several couples getting married. Surprisingly visitors were still allowed to enter and look around. One thing that stood out to me: there were no rows of seats inside the church. Here people usually stand during the service, walk around, light candles and pray in front of icons, which is quite different from many Western European churches. We also saw a mosaic near the parking lot right next to the church. No clue who that is supposed to be.

It is surreal seeing giant cruise ships towering over the tiny medieval streets of Kotor. The old town is beautiful, specially in the morning or evening, when the guests from the cruise ships have left town. ;) Interesting finds as well in the Cat Museum.

We visited the historic fortress and old stone streets of old town Bar. Modern Bar has quite interesting architecture as well. And of course we had to drive to the oldest living olive tree, which is said to be almost 2.300 years old.

Yesterday we explored the highest mausoleum in the world: the Njegoš Mausoleum, perched 1,660m above sea level on Mount Lovćen. After climbing the steps we were rewarded with an incredible view all the way to the Adriatic coast. Later, we descended underground into the Lipa Cave near Cetinje. Stretching for over 2.5 kilometers, the cave is filled with spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and albino animals.

Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans, known for its wild nature, water lilies, and rich birdlife. We also visited Monastery Kom on an island, which dates back to the 15th century. The carp we tried here was delicious and indeed different.
