**A single toast, captured for more than a century. 🥂**

In *Hip, Hip, Hurrah! Artists’ Party at Skagen* (1888), P.S. Krøyer brings us straight into the world of the Skagen painters.

Danish, Norwegian and Swedish artists gather around the table beneath the trees. Glasses are raised, sunlight flickers through the leaves, and the white tablecloth catches flashes of green, gold and blue.

The scene feels spontaneous, but Krøyer worked on the painting for years, using sketches and photographs to build the composition. Even the small details tell stories. Young Helga Ancher sits with her mother, Anna Ancher, surrounded by some of the people who made Skagen one of Scandinavia’s most famous artistic communities.

Krøyer turned a private celebration into one of the great images of Nordic art: friendship, summer light and a group of artists enjoying the world they had created around them.

The Battle of Stamford Bridge, 1870

One of the most dramatic moments in Viking history, painted more than 800 years after it happened.

At the centre of Arbo’s battlefield stands Harald Hardrada, King of Norway. According to tradition, he was struck in the throat by an arrow during the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25 September 1066.

Around him, Arbo builds a scene of almost complete disorder: horses, shields, weapons, wounded men and soldiers moving in every direction. Yet your eye keeps returning to Hardrada in blue.

His death marked the collapse of the Norwegian invasion of England.

And the timing makes the story even more remarkable.

Just 19 days later, the victorious English army of Harold Godwinson fought another invasion force at Hastings, where England’s history changed again.

One year after Denmark’s defeat in the Second Schleswig War, Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann painted the aftermath.

There is no battlefield in A Wounded Danish Soldier (1865). No soldiers charging. No heroic victory.

Instead, a wounded man lies in bed while a woman sits beside him with a book in her hands. Medicine stands on the windowsill. Their hands meet quietly at the centre of the painting.

Baumann shifts our attention to something war paintings often leave outside the frame: the people who come home wounded, and those who care for them.

Look closely at the soldier’s face. He is the only figure looking directly at us.

Jotunheimen means “the home of the giants,” and on this map from 1917, the name feels entirely appropriate.

Ridges, glaciers, valleys and lakes crowd the surface. The dense shading turns the sheet into something almost three-dimensional, while routes and place names reveal a landscape that people were already exploring on foot.

Mountain maps offered more than geographical information. They helped transform remote terrain into a place that could be studied, crossed and remembered. Every line promised a pass, a summit or a difficult journey into the high country.

More than a century later, many of these names still guide hikers through Norway’s most famous mountain region.

This map captures Bergen at the edge of a major change.

It shows Bergen and neighbouring Aarstad in 1914. One year later, Årstad was incorporated into Bergen, greatly expanding the city’s territory and population.

Look closely and the familiar shape of Bergen begins to emerge: the dense centre gathered around the harbour, roads pushing outward and settlements occupying the narrow spaces between water and mountains.

A city map records streets and boundaries. It also preserves a moment when places that now feel inseparable were still administered as different communities.

Norwegian expressions become wonderfully strange when translated word for word.

If you are “helt på jordet,” you are completely out on the field. In practice, you have misunderstood everything.

When it is “bare blåbær,” there are only blueberries. Fortunately, that means the situation is easy and there is little to worry about.

And if you “tråkker i salaten,” you have stepped in the salad, usually by saying something awkward or embarrassing.

This poster gathers Norwegian sayings alongside their literal wording and actual meaning. Small pieces of language can reveal a surprising amount about humour, everyday life and the way a culture sees the world.

Nineteen years after Denmark and Norway went their separate political ways, they still shared the same map sheet.

Published in London in 1833, this map places Denmark, southern Norway, the Skagerrak and parts of Sweden within one connected maritime landscape. It was issued under the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge and engraved by J. & C. Walker.

The sea occupies the centre of the composition. For centuries, these waters carried merchants, sailors, officials, news and family connections between the Scandinavian coasts.

Borders may change quickly. Geography has a longer memory.

A map from an age when the far north still held plenty of mystery.

Created by Abraham Ortelius in 1575, this remarkable map presents Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland and the North Atlantic through the eyes of a 16th-century cartographer. Familiar coastlines sit alongside outdated geography and details shaped by travel accounts, older sources and imagination.

Ortelius was the creator of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, often regarded as the first modern atlas.
