Grethe was an architect and designer, and one of the most recognized representatives of Danish industrial design for which she won numerous awards. She was a pioneer and has had great impact in the Danish Designs history by aesthetically simple, timeless and functional designs that have become classics – even to this day. Grethe is most famous for the faience dinnerware Blåkant, porcelain dinnerwa

re Hvidpot and stoneware dinner set Ildpot series, which for many years was a great success for Royal Copenhagen and steel cutlery Copenhagen for Georg Jensen. Grethes design accommodates quality, personality and respect for the user; she wanted it to be simple and anonymous, but be a daily joy for those who used it.

Simge Pehlivan and her colleague Lena Khirzner are Master's students in Architecture at the Technical University of Vienna. Currently enrolled in a Graphic Design elective course, they have been exploring the work and legacy of Danish designer Grethe Meyer. As part of the course, they developed an internal publication dedicated to her designs. Their concept was to create a foldable booklet that, when fully unfolded, resembles a carefully set dining table—a visual reference to Meyer's celebrated tableware designs. The result is a distinctive and memorable publication that combines graphic design, storytelling, and spatial thinking.

When Grethe Meyer designed the Hvidpot tableware, her ambition was clear: to create a service that did not steal attention, but instead elevated what mattered most — the meal and the sense of community around the table.

“When you design tableware, in my opinion, it cannot be neutral and simple enough. The tableware should form a natural frame for the meal, which is the supporting element,” Grethe Meyer once said. And it was precisely this refined simplicity that became her signature.
Hvidpot is the result of a deep understanding of both form and function. Every element was carefully developed to feel comfortable in the hand, withstand everyday use and embody a timeless elegance. From the softly profiled plates to the precisely designed spout of the jug that never drips, every detail was thoughtfully considered.

This year, FDB Møbler pays tribute to Danish design heritage with the relaunch of Hvidpot.

Had the pleasure of one last meeting at Georg Jensen’s original headquarters before the company moves together with Royal Copenhagen to the shared Fiskars location at Flintholm Company House.

Georg Jensen has been a dedicated partner of Grethe Meyer’s Copenhagen cutlery since 1992 — and the production continues more than three decades later.

Grethe Meyer had a quiet wildness that only fully unfolded later in life.
As she approached 80, she immersed herself in color—finally exploring a passion she had long held back. The result was '4 All Seasons': her most vibrant design, inspired by nature’s shifting tones and built on Blue Line forms in shades of red, yellow, blue, and green—meant to be mixed and matched freely.
A bold and joyful vision. Perhaps too bold. The many variations proved difficult for retailers to stock, and the series never became a commercial success—despite perfectly capturing the spirit of the 1990s.
A beautiful reminder that not all great ideas are measured in sales.

With Boligens Byggeskabe – which are initially referred to as ‘A series of built-in cabinets’ – Grethe Meyer and Børge Mogensen put the family’s storage needs on a formula. They design a system that comes to include more than closet space but also features workspaces, beds, sofas and sewing tables: a regular ‘machine for living in’ made of wood. The idea undoubtedly arose during their work on Byggebogen, where Grethe and Børge co-edited the housing section, which had a strong emphasis on interior design and storage. What is the best solution? Let’s design it ourselves!

Grethe creates a small conservatory at the heart of her courtyard garden—capturing light throughout the year and extending the life of the home into every season. With the help of a landscape architect, the garden becomes an integrated part of her living space.
Originally designed as an open structure, the house gradually evolves. Living alone, Grethe adapts it entirely to her own needs—shaping a home that reflects both independence and a deeply personal way of living.
