Oh, what a night...
The production of TURANDOT in Athens by The Greek National Opera was simply magnificent.
The setting was just magical, with the moon rising right over the amphitheatre as Calaf sang to the beauty of the princess: "Turandot, oh daughter of the moon".
So much in this production made such good sense; we actually saw Turandot's ancestress manhandled and killed even before the first note was struck and throughout the rest of the opera the ghost of the ancestress danced around Turandot as a constant reminder for her not to give in to the flow of suitors and repeat the tragedy. We understood her fear and her dark mind.
The same happened with the Persian prince, pleading for Turandot's love. He was killed right at the beginning for not solving the riddles and his ghost kept appearing as a warning for Calaf of the danger he faced. So, much was at stake.
The slave Liu's love for Calaf is always believable but so often when she is forced to reveal his real name, she is just pushed around and restrained by guards. Here she went through torture, her rope was covered in blood, she ended up slashing her wrists and being attacked with swords. We believed her when she sang, that she couldn't go on.
Throughout the opera Turandot and most of her court wore masks. It made Turandot and everything about her unapproachable and remote.
When Turandot discovered that Calaf's name means love and that his love for her had infected her heart with love for him, a fine balance was struck. All through the story we understood what had darkened her mind and blinded her, but towards the end she lost her mask, her cover, the true person appeared and love conquered.
Tonight this big pivotal moment in the story was balanced perfectly like the last two cards placed carefully on top of a house of cards.
The set and costume designs by Chloe Obolensky were just beautiful. Liu was sung by Maria Kosovitsa, Calaf by Riccardo Massi and Turandot by Catherine Foster. All were a great delight and it was truly a great and unforgettable evening.
