✅ 6 Helpful First Aid Kits for Babies🚑

We include products we think are useful for our readers. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. Here’s our process.
When you’re expecting, it sometimes seems like you’re creating a never-ending list of items to buy for your new bundle of joy.
In addition to the basics, you’re probably being told by friends and family (and know-it-all strangers) about all the things you “need” for your baby.
A lot of that “stuff” is just fluff, or “nice to haves,” but some are extremely important. And one that you absolutely don’t want to forget is a baby first aid kit.

Why buy a baby first aid kit? 🤔

“A first aid kit is important to have at home so that, in case of an emergency, no one has to run out to the store and waste valuable time to get supplies,” says Wendy Proskin, MD, a pediatrician at Westmed Medical Group in Rye, New York.
There are many common conditions and ailments that newborns and older babies might experience during the first year and beyond, including gassiness, a stuffy nose, fever, and the pains of teething, in which a first aid kit can come in handy.
While you can put together your own first aid kit using several items you already have in your house, many of those products may not be formulated for use by an infant.
Luckily, there are several first aid kits on the market that are made specifically for infants and come with everything you need to care for your child in various instances.

What to look for 👀

A newborn kit, according to Proskin, should include the following:
• a re**al thermometer (the quicker the read, the better)
• nail clippers
• gauze pads or cotton balls
• saline drops
• a nasal aspirator

A kit for an older infant will be a little different, however, so you should update the contents of your kit accordingly as your child passes the 6-month mark.

This kit, Proskin explains, should also include:
• acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fevers or pain
• oral diphenhydramine (Benedryl) for allergic reactions
• bandages
• alcohol wipes and hand sanitizer
• antibiotic ointment
• gauze, tape, and scissors
• gloves

As you create your registry or list of things to buy for your little one, consider some of these first aid kits for babies that come equipped with just about everything you might need to care for your child.

Safety first ✅

If you suspect your child may be sick, it’s always best to call their pediatrician’s office to discuss the symptoms over the phone to find out if they recommend bringing your child in to be examined.
If, for any reason, your child has a re**al temperature that exceeds 100.4°F (38°C) you should bring them to the doctor.
Of course, it’s always better to err on the side of caution with a young infant, so be sure to follow your new-parent instinct if you think your baby isn’t acting normal.
Additionally, as a safety precaution, it’s best not to put a bandage on a young infant who can easily pull it off and put it in their mouth, as this poses a choking hazard. If you do have to use a bandage, be sure it’s placed in an area that your baby can’t reach and remove as soon as possible.

All About Your 1-Month-Old Baby👶🏼🥰

If you’re celebrating your precious baby’s 1-month birthday, let us be the first to welcome you to the second month of parenthood! At this point, you may feel like a diapering pro, have a feeding schedule that runs like a precision machine, and be grateful that those first few nights of fumbling with a newborn feel like a distant memory.

Or (and maybe more likely), you may still feel like you’re fumbling. Totally OK. You’re doing a great job, even at those times when it may not feel like it and the worries creep in.

It’s common to wonder how your baby is developing and progressing, especially in these early months. Let’s take a look at the physical and developmental averages (keep in mind that there’s a huge range of “normal”), sleeping and eating changes, and common infant ailments that are typical of this age.

Those size ‘NB’ clothes may be getting a bit snug👕👚

Growth is often a size XL on the new parent worry scale. What’s typical at 1 month of age depends on your baby’s birth weight and whether they were born at term or early.

For averages, you’re looking at about 9.9 pounds (4.5 kilograms) for a boyTrusted Source and 9.2 lbs. (4.2 kg) for a girlTrusted Source. As far as length, the boys’ 50th percentile length is 21.5 inches (54.6 centimeters) while girls’ is 21.1 in. (53.6 cm).
But this won’t be true for parents whose babies were born heavier or longer than that to begin with — or for preemies born much lighter than the typical 7-lb. newborn.

In those cases, a more useful way to measure progress might be the rate of growth. Your newborn may grow 0.5 to 1 inches in the first month and gain 5 to 7 ounces each week during that same period.

Your pediatrician will record all these measurements at baby’s 1-month wellness check, so there’s no need for daily or weekly weigh-ins at home. Don’t let Dr. Google have control over your worry levels at this point — if your pediatrician isn’t concerned, you shouldn’t be, either. We know, easier said than done.

Sleep, eat, repeat 💫

By now you may be moving to a more predictable routine with eating and sleeping. Nursing babies may feed eight times a day, or every 2 to 3 hours, while babies on formula may go 4 hours between feedings. You may notice that your little one knows when they’re full and falls asleep while nursing, as well.

Sleeping is on everyone’s wish list in a household with an infant. At this stage of life, though, sleeping is very much tied to feeding. With tiny stomachs, babies can’t hold very much at once. You may find that your baby sleeps about 15 hours total, but off and on around the clock, doctors say. That said, there is good news to be had even at the 1-month mark.

“At this stage, your baby should be able to start sleeping for longer stretches,” said Dr. Esther Liu, chair of pediatrics, University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Liu recommends you get your baby in the habit of being put down drowsy and let them learn to fall asleep in their bassinet, alone and on their back.

Best vegetables for young babies 😋🥰

For babies just starting to eat solids (around 6 months or so), try these six softer, blendable veggies.

Carrots🥕
Bugs Bunny’s fave orange veggies are a baby food staple for good reason. Once cooked, carrots puree beautifully and offer a not-too-piquant flavor for baby’s sensitive palate.
Plus, they contain plenty of fiber to promote healthy digestion, as well as beta carotene, which converts to vitamin A to boost vision and immune function.

Spinach🥬
Speaking of cartoon characters’ favorite vegetables, remember Popeye’s love for spinach? This leafy green deserves its cartoon reputation for being rich in iron — a nutrient babies especially need for energy and development.
Cooked, pureed spinach is best for younger infants. Add a sprinkle of salt to enhance taste.

Pumpkin🎃
Pumpkin may bring to mind chilly temperatures and falling leaves, but with canned varieties, your child can enjoy the gourds any time of year. Pureed pumpkin’s smooth texture is ideal as one of baby’s first foods, and high amounts of A and C round out its nutrient profile.

Avocados🥑
Avocados are the heroes of healthy monounsaturated fats. These important macronutrients help develop baby’s brain and nervous system, as well as increase absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Meanwhile, each serving of avocado comes with a sizable dose of fiber and folate.
Keep in mind that a little bit of high fat avocado goes a long way. Start with a serving of about 1 tablespoon, mashed.

Sweet potatoes🥔
Mashed cooked sweet potatoes not only make for easy-peasy serving to your little one, they’re loaded with nutrients, too! Like carrots and pumpkin, sweet potatoes burst with immune- and vision-supporting vitamin A, plus plenty of fiber, manganese, vitamin B6, and vitamin C.
When serving sweet potato to your baby, be sure to mash well and remove the skin.

Peas🟢
Mushy peas might not sound like a culinary delight to adults, but they’re an excellent choice for infants. These little green balls are one of the highest-protein veggies, with 4 gramsTrusted Source per serving.
To serve, simply steam frozen peas and blend until pureed. You can even add a bit of breast milk for a thinner consistency.
