Identity is not inherited whole.
It is investigated. Explored.

I came to Estonia for language studies.
Nothing more ambitious than that.

On a whim, suggested by my dear friend .alender, I entered a fashion contest.
At the end of that year, my first collection was born. And I stayed.

These images are from that first collection.
Photographed in Tihemetsa-
the place my grandmother came from.

The model, is one of the few people
I had known here since childhood.
And the photographer, .r
was then a new acquaintance.
20 years later, she photographed my latest collection.

Up close, the path looks crooked.
Zig-zagging. Accidental.

Only when you zoom out
does it reveal its direction.

This is still an emotional day for me.
I carry it with reflection and gratitude.

Grateful I was given the chance to come.
Grateful for what unfolded.
Grateful that what began as research
became a life -
and my own Estonian family.

Olen tänulik, et mul oli võimalus siia tulla.
Tänulik kõige eest, mis sellest kasvas.
Et see, mis algas otsinguna, on saanud eluks -
ja minu enda Eesti pereks.

About the clothes:
Simple linen dress/apron with embroidery,
like the Estonian folk costume I wore as a child.
The original embroidery was made by my grandmother and comes from Rapla.

Knitted stockings made in the Haapsalu scarf technique. Panties knitted in a Muhu pattern.

Boots inspired by traditional pastlad,
reimagined with plateau clog heels
and high shafts, like in this image.

A mashup of everything I was initially drawn to.
Less conceptual. More emotional.

Some parts of this collection now belong to the National Museum of Estonia.

Surreal?
Just real.

Looking back at summer, in the middle of winter.
That feeling is exactly this.

From the Argi collection.

Merino teddy coat with stencil printed ornaments and archaic embroidery.
Like a body mitten.

Surreal Helen (yes, quite fittingly, it’s actually her nickname) is giving it exactly the oomph it deserves.

With a head this size, imagine my personal climate.

Made while sick.
Designed to disappear.

Didn’t.

If you see me walking down the street, walk on by.

Tibetan lambskin.
Bucket hat.
Simple build. Fast hands.
Regular machine. Zig-zag stitch.

Disguise is never neutral.
Neither is tradition.
