HYSTERIC GLAMOUR. TOKYO, 1984.
Before Japanese streetwear became a global obsession, Nobuhiko Kitamura was already mixing rock, denim, erotic graphics, photography and American counterculture into something completely his own. He founded Hysteric Glamour in 1984, and the brand still describes its DNA through denim, military, workwear, outdoor influences and 60s–80s pop culture.
It was never clean fashion.
It was Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, Courtney Love, underground magazines, photography, noise, s*x, denim and attitude compressed into clothes. Kitamura built relationships with musicians and photographers, and that collision between fashion and subculture became part of the brand’s identity.
And then there’s Anna Tsuchiya.
Model, actress, singer, rock obsessive, and exactly the kind of figure Hysteric Glamour has always orbited around. The brand still features her in its own editorial universe today.
That’s why an old Hysteric Glamour piece doesn’t feel like “retro Japanese fashion”.
It feels like somebody tore a page out of Tokyo and somehow it survived.
