Tricot veste (3/3)

This tricot “veste sans manches” was made according to original surviving examples.

It is made out of blue tricot on the exterior and lined with linen, on the interior and on the back. It is closed by 12 pewter regimental buttons.

Like other contemporary vestes, it has an open neck, a fake pocket on the left, and a functional pocket on the right. The back can be tightened using a linen tape.

Tricot veste (2/3)

As for the historical accuracy. There’s a big debate about the use or not of vestes sans manches on the french army. We know for sure, that the Garde had worn them (check out our post about it!) but evidences seem to point out that the majority of the units wore veste Avec manches.

What do you think? Should regular troops wear veste Avec manches when reenacting?

Tricot veste (1/3)

This veste is made out of tricot, a milled woolen twill. Tricot was know for its elasticity and resistance, and we can find it in many vestes, pants and other garments of the napoleonic period.

Garde veste (3/3)

Final result on our c.1810 Garde veste, made for our friend who is reenacting the mid guard on the french army.

The pattern, construction and materials have been made according to the excellent work of Paul Lindsay Dawson , who is mainly conducting the research on the french army, specially the Garde. We highly recommend to buy his book on the Imperial Guard infantry for more information on this precise object.

In addition to our other 2 posts, we could say about this veste that it is quite short, and is closed by 12 buttons, 8 of them are Garde ones and 4 of them are bone. It is also tighten on the back by a linen strap, sewn to the tricot.

Garde veste (2/3)

This model of the Garde veste shows an interesting variety of materials. The front and collar are made out of white tricot, in our case Kersey from K&P Historical Textiles. The back is also made of tricot, but very rudimental: it is unbleached and shows the threads very well. The interior, as oposite as believed, is lined with white serge and not linen like the majority of vestes used in re-enactment.

Garde veste (1/3)

This is the false pocket of a c.1810 Garde veste, from the french army.

As you can see, both pockets are false, that’s what originals show, and also it is worth mentioning that the pockets are sewn not flat, but slightly rounded on the superior side.

British Regimental Coat (3/3)

Final result for the British regimental coat, in this case belonging to the Chasseurs Britanniques Regiment (CBR). It is handsewn and made out of historical materials.

On the exterior it can be seen madder red broadcloth for the body and Sky blue broadcloth for the collar and cuffs. It is laced with regimental woolen lace.

On the interior, the body is lined with white woolen serge, being the sleeves unlined, according to originals and regulations.

British Regimental Coat (2/3)

Here it can be seen the fake pockets of the regimental coat. The pockets are laced with regimental lace and sewn directly on the body.

There are few differences between Center and Flank companies, having the first horizontal pockets (as shown in part 3) and the grenadier and light coy having vertical ones.

As for the “real” pockets, in this case - so for center coys- they are hidden underneath the fake ones. On a flank company jacket they would be placed on the real pleats of the jacket.
