Have you ever wondered what would be the best way for brands to assess and improve their environmental and social commitments? It is to map out their supply chains. Disclosing this information to the public - transparency - also allows brands to be held accountable.

Tier 1: Factory Manufacturing – Cutting, sewing, assembling, and packing for shipment

These are the facilities where finished goods are made and shipped from. Most brands and retailers have direct business relationships with these suppliers.

Tier 2: Processing Facilities - Fabric production

Processed materials are turned into fabrics and later used for assembly. Printing, dying, laundering, and embroidery are part of this tier.

Tier 3: Processing Facilities - Yarn spinners and fiber processors

Raw materials are turned into fibers at production sites; spinning, knitting, and weaving take place. Yarns are spun, and dyes and bleach are applied in wet processes.

Tier 4: Raw material suppliers - Farms and synthetic material factories

Farms, livestock farms, cotton plantations, or any other supplier of raw materials.

We're celebrating Black History Month by highlighting three e-commerce platforms that support black-owned businesses. Take a look:

thirteen lune - an e-commerce site that curates beauty products from Black- and brown-owned brands. Thirteen Lune seeks to expand on the concept of inclusivity and use its site to educate and engage a wider audience. Ceylon, Beija Flor Naturals, and Liha Beauty are some of the brands they carry.

The Folklore - this online retailer carries high-end and emerging fashion designers from Africa and the diaspora. Exclusivity and sustainability are important concepts for The Folklore as they carry a limited stock of each product and the accessories and homewares available are handmade by local artisans in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco, and Cote d’Ivoire.

Industrie Africa - a platform looking to highlight Africa’s exceptional fashion designers. Customers can shop brands by region, style, and craftsmanship. They even have access to Industrie Africa’s sustainability framework to help them make informed purchases.

We have all certainly read about and put into practice most or maybe all of these recommendations. It’s important now more than ever to remind ourselves of all the little things we can do at home (and at the office) to reduce our environmental footprint. Every effort counts. You can start by tackling just one – no need to get overwhelmed. ♻️🏡🌍

Why is “Made in” important on the tags on your clothes? Let's take a look at how "Made in" is defined.

“Made in” points to a product’s country of origin, the place where this product has been manufactured, produced, or grown. Each country determines how the country of origin is defined. This usually falls under one of the following rules:

1. SUBSTANTIAL TRANSFORMATION: The country of origin points to the place where the product or material undergoes a major transformation, resulting in a change of use or character.

2. SPECIFIC CHANGE IN TARIFF CLASSIFICATION: A tariff classification determines the type of good in question, using an international standardized system called Harmonized system, mostly used for declaration purposes. When the transformation process changes the tariff classification of a product, this can also alter the country of origin to the place where this transformation took place.

3. ADDITIONAL VALUE: The country of origin can also be determined by the value percentage of a material or the cost of creating a good. This percentage requirement differs from country to country. For example, if the value percentage of domestic material, or the cost of creating goods, has reached a certain minimum requirement the country of origin does not need to change. This may also apply when the value of imported materials or the cost of creating goods is within a certain maximum range.

Did you know that sustainability can be fun and stylish? Westwood's philosophy is based on the idea that clothes are not disposable. Instead, they should last a long time, look good, and feel comfortable all day.

Rest in Power, Vivienne Westwood. 🙏

Meet Ornella, the founder of Open Studios.

After a trip to Southeast Asia a few years ago, Ornella came back determined to launch a fashion brand that could capture her time in the region while remaining mindful of nature and garment workers. Upon her return, she struggled to find sustainable manufacturers willing to work with small brands. Realizing her friends in the industry often came across the same issue, she saw the opportunity to help designers bring their ideas to life responsibly. This is how Open Studios was born.

Our bodies are mostly water. Did you know that a newborn baby is 78% water? In fact, adults are 55-60% water. Water has to do with pretty much everything the body does. It’s a big component of blood, which brings nutrients to all our cells. It helps our bodies get rid of wastes. Water acts as a shock absorber for our brain and spinal cord. Oh how dependent we are on water!
